Definitely the axle seals with some OEM ones. Check the bottom side of the trans down the middle where there's a split and make sure its not wet/leaking as it seems to be a common spot to leak from. Not sure if the VG has a filter but if it does, I suggest doing that, if you have a VE then def change the filter.

If it's a VG, use OEM Nissan fluid.. I remember Brian once mentioning that aftermarket trans fluid doesnt have the right amount of something, cant remember what but it kills the trans sooner.

The VG does have a filter iirc.

It has a filter but it requires unbolting the tranny in half to get to it. Not worth to get to unless you're going to do something else on the inside of the tranny.

And which Nissan ATF is it that's recommended to use? Matic D? I have been using Dexron III the last couple of years. So far no problems but if the Nissan ATF will do better I won't hesitate to switch.

Well, there ya go... change that filter while the tranny is out, even if you have to split it

RE4F02A internal tranny filter...

don't bother changing that unless you want to touch the inside of the tranny.

replace the axle seals.
replace the torque convertor seal.
check to make sure the case is not weeping between the two halfs.
if you like check to see if the torque convertor has enough fluid inside it and replace the TC if needed.

You would need to replace the gasket.

Infam0usMax, I thought of something that can be done if you plan to open up the transmission. When the transmission went out on my Max, I got a brake band with kevlar lining so it can last longer since that was the most worn part of the transmission when I tore it apart. I don't know if you can find one around you but that would be one thing to consider.

i would say clean it up w/ some brake cleaner and RTV it. crack the case and lay down a bead of RTV on the mating surfaces. to replace the gasket you'll need to separate the two halves and clean it up and then put it back. at that point might as well rebuild your busted tranny.

there's a gasket between the two halves of the tranny (where you said ATF is weeping from).

you need to unbolt all the bolts around the case and CAREFULLY lift up a little on the top half and clean and squeeze in some RTV.

no tranny NEEDS to be out of the car.
