I follow the FSM exactly when I do jobs like this. So yes, I did use a feeler gauge.

yea I went home and looked in the FSM for my 85 and it didn't say anything about the tension, it said to "turn the tensioner clockwise and counter clockwise two or three times", but then again it also says to pull valve covers and loosen rockers but I know when I did my 87 I did the feeler gauge thing.
