How do I remove the door molding?

I need to do some paint work on the door. Is the door molding just held by double sided tape? Any tips on removal?

yup, just double sided tape. the metal is smooth behind it.

you can use a piece of fishing line and some leather gloves to protect your hands and "saw" it off using the fishing line.

If you're lucky, you can just pull it off but that's rarely the case.

good heat gun (not blow torch), and patience.

If you need any work done around the upper part/door glass, most those peices just slip into place. The outer trim, just roll the window down and slip a screw driver beneath the metal and gently press upward and it should begin to slide up and off. Most everything is pretty straight forward once you look at it.

I just peeled mine off and then spent a lot of time with a scuff pad and soap getting the adhesive residue off... a lot of time.

Did you try Goo Gone or 3M Adhesive Remover?

Haha. No, I underestimated the adhesive.

I used a heat gun and a plastic gasket scraper to gently lift the molding up. Then once I could get my hand on it, it just peels off. But it's best to keep the heat gun on it while you pull slowly.

Do not use a screwdriver, otherwise you will scratch the paint.

Then, Goo Gone, a plastic gasket scraper, and lots of work, will get all the adhesive off. I had a hand file and kept the gasket scraper as sharp as I could. Once it was sharpened, it made it so much easier! But it would lose it's edge after a few minutes.

fishing line? goo gone? HA! 3M makes a flappy wheel you use with a drill rated at around 3,000-3,500 rpm and your in buisness. it takes time but works wonders. fishing line. that funny.

The wheel 3m makes is an erasor wheel and it attaches right to any drill type tool but if your not careful you can sit on the paint too long and burn right through it but it is the best tool for the job.. Fishing line is not strong enough to cut the 2 sided tape but metal wire is strong enough hook a pair of pliers to either side of the wire and use a sawing motion to cut the tape behind the molding...3m's adhesive remover in the spray can works very well also...
