Do it yourself heat shield for cool air intake

I wanted a heat shield for the cone air filter, to protect it from dirt and help prevent engine heat from getting to it. I had been thinking of building something from sheet metal, but hadn't come up with a design I liked.

Then I came across this, which some may be familiar with.
http://f150online.com/forums/lightni...ir-intake.html

So here's my take on it.

Whether or not the intake gets hot enough to reduce performance is debatable, but on a hot day the filter would definitely feel hot after driving for a while. After testing it today, the intake tube and MAF felt hot, but the filter and area around it was quite cool.

Great mod. when done right like you did. It looks oem. I did this on my friends mkv gli. I plan on doing it in my spec v and my maxima.

Short rams suck, they need all the help they can get

Good job on that. Looks nice and very clean. In fact, your whole car looks clean.

Anyway, that should definitely help the "heat soak" that plagues the short-ram intake setup. I've always noticed a huge difference in performance switching between short-ram "HAI" setups and CAI setups over the years.

Just a nice, simple, tastefully modded VE 5. Post more often

I like that. I might have to do it to my 4th gen. For added resistance to heat, maybe you could cover the outside of the can with some sort of foil tape.

if you could make a carbon fiber box, it would work much better, too.
everything I am reading says cf doesn't transfer heat well (good insulator).

I don't like how the intake is set up on those Max's, my 89' factory set up is better. I don't think the cone filter is the answer for more power, it's just a noise maker. Running something out the front of the nose works better for CAI. You did decent job though on your heat shield for your cone filter.

Thanks. It does look OEM which I really like. I don't think the cone filter is the answer for more power either. I'd just go for a panel filter in the OEM air box but at the time the cone was cheaper and I ended up really liking the sound.

I'd post more, but more time than not I find all the info I'm looking for on here in previous posts and stickies.

Go with a 6" air filter and Jwt or Stillen intake bellmouth and you'll see the difference....I prefer sheetmetal over thin plastic trash can material......
