new antenna

hi everyone, i was hoping someone could help me out. i have a 92 SE and the motor and the mast in my antenna are shot. i'm not going to pay to get it fixed because it's a ridiculous amount of money for an antenna.... my question is does anyone know anything about replacing the telescopic antenna with one of those shorter, rubber-y antennas? i want to get a different one because i don't want mine to break off in the car wash and, well, it's ugly when it's up all the time. any ideas????

I've seen universal fit power antennas in various stereo shops for about $65 cdn. I have the same problem and I'm considering that. Just a thought.

Go to discount auto or autozone etc.. get yourself a stationary black antenna for about less then $15, go in the trunk , pull out old assembly, install new antenna ( very easy) and enjoy......

Don't make the mistake of buying those "universal" antennas (the whole assembly + motor) off ebay. I don't know if anyone else has been able to make those work though, I spliced so many wires and tried to figure out why the antenna didn't work and just gave up. I ended up rigging up my original motor with the new mast out of this universal (Hirschman I think) antenna. I'm not saying they don't work but this one really needed to be rigged up and it wasn't as straightforward as I'd like. Its actually a lot easier than I thought to switch the mast but, my mast was all that was bad. I ended up paying $50 for that stupid mast! Starseed, since you said your motor was bad, you should check at junk yards. You could get the whole assembly for about $20 or less if you bargain with 'em("I only have 20 bucks" is a great line to use)! At least I now have quick disconnects for my antenna if I need to swap it in the future.

Are you sure its the motor... usually its the nylon zipper cord that breaks. You can order a replacement antenna mast assembley from courtesy nissan for around $35 or something.

I replaced my friends in his 91SE. Mine still works so I went ahead and lubricated the zipper cord in mine with bearing grease. That should protect it from getting water in there and freezing in the winter. that is when my friend said his broke (it was frozen and then he turned on the radio, the addition stress on the zipper cord caused it to fail). My .02 cents

Don't use a Rubber...

antenna...

It destroys the look of the greatest looking car on the road for one thing and Nissan uses FM Diversity on their decks (both Clarion and Bose). If you go with a cheapy you'll spend momre money on the little adapter to conver the FMD plug to the regular antenna and the thing will pick up all kinds of noise across the FM band. Stations come in way too strong and fuzzy. The FM Diversity locks out weak signals and really improves the reception on "acceptible" signals.

Spend the money and get a mast.

Just my $.02

I have a power antenna in mine, and I just removed the antenna and removed the seized electric motor. This way, you can move the antenna manually, your cheapest fix.
