there goes my tranny

Posting from my crackberry at work, this morning on the way to work 2nd to 1st was shifting bad and when I hit the gas in first she revved like crazy and wouldn't move. I baby my tranny but I guess 421k was all she could take. Gotta get estimates for a rebuild now

5-speed swap; will hold the turbo plans together better. or you will be doning it again.

he said it would be a while and to take it to a specialist. Aamco is pretty good so i'll see how much a rebuilt or new tranny would be from them

its one of those things thats expected with a car this age i guess lol

i'm for sure going to get a 5spd soon but i want to ride auto for another year or so.

the tranny itself has had quirks for the last couple of years, 1st to 2nd you would have to shift at 1.5-2k for 10 minutes until it warmed up, afterwards it was like butter and you could shift at redline. its made noises going from reverse to drive as well and lately its taken a few seconds to engage into drive

i cruised the local ads and theres a 1986 Toyota AE86, 5spd with 241,000km for $500, RWD of course. i asked if it will pass inspection, if so i may buy it and rebuild my Max's tranny next month but odds are IMO a 24 year old car would need work to pass inspection so most likely i'll be going with the rebuild Monday

alright so i was going to park it until Monday and take it straight to the tranny shop, but i thought may as well take it out tonight and see whats up, worst case is i get it towed and i have nothing to lose

i drove for half a hour and recreated the situation and it held fine. i went into a empty parking lot, let it go from 2nd to high 1st and hit the gas and it accelerated and went right back into 2nd.

did what happened this morning screw anything up? all seems good now for some reason, is there a logical explanation?

EDIT- ive heard not to change the tranny fluid on older trannies because the old fluid could be preventing some parts from failing, but im contemplating just changing it and seeing what happens. good idea or no?

Wow 263k miles... not bad. AAMCO is ok... not the best, its like taking your car to Jiffy Lube. At least the ones I've been to here. Took my 4th gen last year to get a road test and the moron kept trying to force it into 1st gear while doing 20-30mph!!! I yelled at him and his reasoning is "well my 93 camry 5spd can do it, this should be able to too"

We also had AAMCO rebuild our 89 caprice trans and it shifted real rough afterward.. good luck with them

the owner of the Aamco here is really nice

cliffs are last year i thought my tranny mounts were bad so i took my Max to a place downtown to get it looked at. he said my tranny is toast, and my shifter bushing is fine. i went home thinking i cant feel anything wrong with the tranny. i took it to Aamco, he said how much rebuilds are etc. and to leave the keys with him and he'll take it around for a bit. i went back, he said its absolutely fine, 1st shifts a bit hard but the tranny will last a long time yet. he said to not be in power mode anymore and said to leave it in comfort mode. i offered to pay him for taking it around and looking at it plus giving me a lecture on trannies but he said i owe him nothing.

i havent gone back to the place that told me my tranny was toast because my shifter bushing was gone and thats why my shifter was feeling weird and it wouldnt start sometimes

but so far so good, i took it around to get the conditioner running through and we're good
