hit a car that was stopped on the highway in the left lane tending to an accident on the other side of the road! it was on a corner at 3am and by the time I saw the car it was too late...luckily I only hit him at ~30-35mph , but that was enough for insurance to total the Max!

My 86 Honda Accord has 232000 miles and gets 40 MPG between home and school. I paid $600 for it + $70 for a CV axle. What now!?

lowered car at 177k, about a 1.5" drop

i put suspension technologies springs on it with tokico struts. the car handles a little tighter, but not overly so. the stock SE suspension was actually great. i also replaced the anti-sway bars, front and back, with beefier ones. the difference in handling is not felt very much at lower speeds. but aggressive surface street driving, which is a cop magnet, brings out the differences as well as when you get it going over 70, 80, 110... you really feel it.

Sure... you MIGHT get 40 MPG on highway (im still calling ) on your four-banger. But... I'm pushing over 265,000 miles on my car, and I can guarantee that I can hand you your bum on the track any day of the week. The Max goes faster, handles better, and can haul more groceries. Plus mine was only $900 more than your Honduh.

Besides...

The Maxima doesn't look like butt...

So...

What NOW!?!?!?

more rambling on

yeah. i think people who are into tuning generally don't care much about gas mileage, even during these price hikes. tuning is about power and image and performance and chicks. my 3rd gen never got great mileage. but i don't really care.

92 maxima with 210,000 miles. All of those miles were put on the little island of Oahu. I had to rebuild the tranny, two new water pumps, two new timing belts, new ac system.......list goes on and on. But the engine is still original. She still got some ***** when I punch it!!

You got me there... Actually you're probably right, I probably get abut 38 mpg on the highway, but its definitely up there. Its great when gas prices are through the roof right now. It depends what you've done to your Max, but stock for stock, I think the Honda has the handling edge. (Double wishbone vs. McFerson(sp)) Of course after 200K miles, we all have bad shocks. I went 150 in my Max, and my friend got my Honda to 100 downhill. I personally don't speed anymore. Maxima wins hands down for room. I am not bragging on my car though, I am a Nissan guy. It just happened to be a great deal for a commuter car. I think after I get done with school, I'll turbo a 4th gen.

Why not just turbo your 3rd gen??? Better than having a "mini-van rear suspension" as Matt would so aptly put it.

stuff

suspension on 3rd gen is better than subsequent gens. also, 3rd gen has factory VLSD. i believe the newest 6th gen has gone back to independent suspension for rear. but body style is ugly compared to 3rd.

I already did it, I was the first to turbo a VE. For handling, I'd probably prefer other cars anyways to a Maxima like a Z.

While I prefer the 3rd Gen's exterior looks over any other Maxima, the 4th gen has a more modern looking interior/dash, better engine, and no annoying automatic seatbelts.

I always thought that the 3rd gen had too long of a hood too.

Just checking in....

I was doing a fallen window on a buddy's Max, and figured I'd stick my head in. My life has changed a lot, I got laid off work and went back to school. For the next couple years its gonna be all about school, no time/money for nice cars. I still got Maxima love, still lovin' third gens, but more important things have come up...

Hey bro...

You wanna buy my welder? I have no use for it, I paid I think $240 or so, I'd let it go for $150 or so. Its a wire feed with MIG connections if you buy the bottle. I have only used it for one turbo manifold

I might just do that. It's a 110v version right? But I have to find another car first.

I just my Maxima running again. It sat for four months. Found a couple of cut wires in a wiring harness that was damaged in accident.
I now have 292,000 and hope to make it to 300,000 by the end of year.
I had the tranny rebuilt at 265,000 but I have not touched the engine. Still get 30 mpg on highway and it doesn't use a drop of oil.

169K Here.

169K.

I've had it since 120K or so and I plan to keep it until they pry it from my cold dead hands.

Had to do the Fuel Injectors and my driver's side CV joint needs doing soon. That's it. All original, except for the drop in K&N and the stereo.

Milage is still fine, and the power is

I have 157,255 miles (baby miles for an '89). Tranny was rebuilt at 148,xxx. Factory stereo died at around 145,xxx replaced that with a Pioneer FH-P4400 double DIN headunit and Pioneer Premier speakers all around. Engine still runs good. Lower control arm bushings replaced at 157,163. Power steering pump was replaced at around 152,xxx. still runnin strong.

Wrecked a '90 GXE in June with 226,000 miles. Original engine and tranny, no work done to the tranny, except drain fluid around 100K and replaced with AMSOIL.

I will always say that was the BEST car I had and will ever have. Did New York at least twice a month with that car, absolutely no problems, everything was stock.

I now have a another '90 GXE, got it with 144K about 2 months ago, and I'll be damned, the thing already has 155K...al that highway running aint no joke.

I always take care of my cars, change my oil regularly (do it myself) frequent tune-ups, and practice preventative maintenance.

I am shooting for 300K with this Max.

I've got 193K on mine, the engine dosen't use a drop of oil, but the tranny is on borrowed time (turning OD off on hills and in town to stop slipping). But I drive an hour and a half one way to work and I get 26-28mpg on the interstate...not too bad!

this thread just wont die, I think I posted a while ago but here it is again.

I am at 272,000+ I get around 20mpg, VE 5 Speed with almost all the bolt ons, CAI, UDP, STS, Y, Cat, B, Muff, all sorts of other goodies. Did the 5 Speed swap at around 250k. I DO NOT baby this car. I redline 1st and 2nd probably 5-10 times a day, easy...and hit 100mph atleast 3 times a day. Oh yeah...did a compression test around 5k ago and it is still factory spec.

VE POWER!
