Link doesn't work

And wait, you want the GPS to stay ON when the car is off?

Why can't you just connect it to constant power?

Just tap into 12V from somewhere, just like hard wiring a radar or something

Pull radio out of dash, tap into yellow/green wire. That's the accessory power wire that switches the radio on and off. that'll work perfectly for the GPS.

will that turn it on though? because when you plug it into external power it doesnt turn on by itself, you have to push the power button. when it losses external power it automatically turns off.

Are you saying your actual GPS unit itself won't turn on AT ALL without you manually pressing the power button? And you want to somehow wire around that on the car side?

If so, you may be SOL. I mean, if that's how your GPS is designed you'll probably always have to push the power button. If you don't like that function of your GPS then you should probably get a different GPS.. unless you want your GPS "always on" even when your car is off, but that's probably not smart in terms of battery drain

just get a flip out screen and put gps on it bro, dont bother making your own cuz some dude did it and it looks like crap cuz the plastic is all melted n all that shet. unless u make a custom center piece and switch locations of the things but that'll cost more than just buying what i said.

If the GPS has a "real" power button (not the touch type like the PS3) you can probarly open the unit, solder on 2 wires between the 2 contacts of the power button, run them through a relay, connect the relay to ACC or the yellow/green wire.

So that the relay wil engange when car is started, and power on your gps.
If the power button is just a touch type, this probarly wont work

It would probably be easiest to ebay your current GPS and buy another one that turns on when you give it power.

I got a Nuvi widescreen (255w? I don't have it in front of me) for under $100 including shipping on ebay a few months ago. It turns on automatically when you power up the car. When you turn off the car, it asks if you want to continue on battery power or turn it off.

yep i have the same one. pretty nice once it grabs onto a signal. but if you turn it off, drive 10 miles, and turn it back on it takes a few minutes to figure out where it is.
