Sorry it's quiet, might have to crank your speakers.

It's the whiring in the background that changes pitch when I accelerate. Not loud but noticable in person at low speed when wind noise doesn't cover it up. You can kinda hear it through the firewall on the highway but not much.

It only happens when in gear. Not in park or neutral. When you put it in park it's completely gone.

Tranny fluid was replaced some months ago and was dirty cause it hadn't been done in some years but the tech said the tranny looked in pretty good shape even after 200k miles. Fluid is super clean now with no particles or bad smell and the the tranny isn't acting up at all.

What do you think it is?

91' GXE auto 201k miles

It's been 4 or 5 years since the timing belt was changed but I suspect if it where that I would hear it regardless of whether or not I was in gear or park.

I'll try and figure out a way to get better audio of it.

Yea, I know it's top of the list. Trying to decide if I can do it myself. Never done a T belt yet. I think this one's got about 40k.

Could it be the T belt if the noise disappears when I'm in park?

i dont think your T belt can be that bad, mine was done about 7 years ago at 320,000km and i got a new one with my other engine work last month at 420,000km. i was worried it would be worn out to death but it was actually in good shape, the teeth were a bit worn but i could have gotten 30,000km more out of it.

its better safe than sorry though, if you can take out a engine yourself its a good thing to learn how to do. while the engines out, its good to do the water pump, tensioner, crank angle sensor, and anything else that needs doing

Yea that's true. Id do that if I had a friends help and a motor crane. I don't know enough to do it myself.

I'm trying to get previous service records for the car specifically about the T belt (just got the car). I may see if I can stick a mirror down there and try and catch a peak at it..see what the teeth look like etc.

So any idea what the noise could be? My first though is tranny but the fluid is so clean and it feels great.

no wobble in crank shaft pulley.

So I cranked the E brake and put it in drive and had a listen. Definitely coming from the tranny area. It's noticeable in person with the hood up and while driving slow with the windows down but driving with the windows up you can't hear it at all and it's not apparent in the videos I'm trying to post. You can't really hear it.

I think I'm just being paranoid. I mean it's got 201k miles on it and it still feels good and the fluid is clean so maybe I should just drive on....

I may drain the tranny fluid res and have a look at the fluid and magnet on the plug at some point though.
