VLSD Conversion

As the title says I was wondering what it takes to convert a non vlsd tranny to a vlsd tranny. I have a non vlsd 5spd from a 91 SE that I've been trying to sell, but since its seeming hopeless I might as well keep it and convert if possible. I've heard there aren't many differences but I'm not 100% sure about that. If someone could inform me of what I need or need to do I would greatly appreciate it.

that question has been asked AT LEAST 20 times in the past 3 years. all the info you need is out there.. in multiple threads.. bigmax90's thread from this past january should answer all of your questions.

and yes, i did the conversion on my 90 GXE (automatic-only from the factory). First a 5spd swap using a non-LSD 5spd tranny out of an 89 SE (VG motor)... then about 8 months later i swapped that out for an LSD one from a 93ish SE (VE motor).

I think he's asking about putting the VLSD coupling inside a non-lsd tranny case. I don't it will fit as the VLSD cases have a buldge to accomodate it.

Did you actually read his post carefully before jumping on him about searching?

I love how people advise others to search at the same time those people themselves know that the search on here isn't worth crap. Yeah I searched for an hour. Nothing telling me exactly what I needed or a write up of any kind. But since you mentioned a name thats a start. I just want to take this big paper weight (non vlsd) and make it a vlsd. Since I can't sell it obviously I'll just keep it and make use of it if mine every craps. I'll call it my back up tranny. Might even get a wild hair to build it up. Only time will tell.

The ironic thing is that he for no reason jumped on you to search due to him misunderstanding your post. I guess you could have jumped on him for not reading

He thought (assumed?) you were asking about simply putting a VE tranny into a VG.

But you're wanting to actually make the non vlsd transmission into a vlsd, correct?

Like Jeff said, I don't think you could fit the VLSD setup into the non VLSD case.

But, if you just want it as a backup, you can still do that. I mean, a good tranny is a good tranny. You'd just have to run VG axles with VE outer joints (a driveshaft shop will be able to do this pretty easily/cheaply). That'd probably be the easiest option in terms of just wanting to use it as a backup. Just get these "hybrid" axles made up and store them with the tranny.

That way, if you ever need to stick the VG tranny in, you just stick in the tranny and hybrid axles and you don't have to mess with swapping knuckles/hubs each time.

can't install a VLSD into a non-VLSD tranny. the VLSD is larger than an open diff and won't fit in the hole.

there's been some talk about a Quaife form a 4 gen fitting, but I don't know if anyone ever tried it in a VG tranny.. not to mention being able to find one and get axles to fit.
