Get one from your local parts store. I bought mine from O'Reilly Autoparts here in Norman, OK. It comes with a lifetime warranty so you can't beat that. I replaced my alty last year this time and just replaced it again two weeks ago. I think I got water in it somehow (it snowed here like 2 weeks ago and I was driving through it like I was in a 4x4 ).

Hope this helps you out.

Eric.

Before you change the alternator have it tested -- free at lots of auto parts store. Also check the regulator and cables and battery and belt. Modern batteries goes without almost any warning. Don't settle for a rebuilt.

I would try local stereo shops. Me thinks that they would have experience in that.

car audio shops should be able to get you in touch with the companies that sell higher current alternators, BUT you really don't need one unless you're running a ridiculously huge system all the time.
my old car was running a 1200W RMS system on the stock-amperage alternator with no problems. it did it for 3 years..

As for buying rebuilt alternators, ALL of them you buy- even from the dealer are remanufactured units. IMO, There is absolutely no sense in spending $300 to get an alternator from a dealer when youcan go down the street and buy the same thing with a LIFETIME WARRANTY for under $100.
if it ever goes bad, yank it and exchange it. 30 minutes and you're done.

U ran 1200 RMS on a stock alternator? Was that on the SE? or a GXE? Are both the alternators 90 amps or is the SE larger.

Thinking about it again, see if your brushes are okay and a rebuilt Bosch wouldn't be so bad or any big good name supplier. Rebuilt Bosch's are $120 with the core.

that was on my GXE. my SE will be running 2300W RMS on the stock alternator (or at least until I fry it).

the VE has I think 5 amps more current than the VG alternators. VG SE and GXE units are the same as far as I remember.

I have a 1200w rms amp AND a 200w peak amp on stock alt in my 92 GXE..lights dim a little on bigger bass hits..never had RPMs drop even at idle though..no caps either, but thinking about getting one or two 1.3 farad caps off e-bay..with some of the electronics I'm starting to stuff in my car, I'm going to get a much larger battery (1000+ CA instead of a 690) so I can run them with the car off..have been considering a higher amperage alt. as well to support my expanding audio/video system..but..other things come first...

A higher CA or CCA battery will NOT help you any.
If you want a better battery look for one with a higher reserve capacity
The cap will help the dimming light problem.
Also try and find a local alternator rebuilder and see if they can wind your alternator to a higher output. stock is only 90amps

690ca/550 CCA battery doesn't really have enough CCA for the winters here anyway..on the very bitter cold days the battery acts like it is dead in my max, but started the toyota 4wd truck I had for a brief time before it was totaled by a loaded semi while I had it parked on the side of the street in the winter..and I was going to get a high CCA battery with the highest possible reserve that I could stuff in the max..not just a high CA..but thanks for the idea with the alt...hadn't thought about having it wound higher, will call some places this week to see how much its going to cost..

The maxs do need a slightly higher CCA than most cars because of our compression ratio
at least those of us with VEs
Most cars should only need 2-300 cca to start it if everything is in close to proper tune

I'm trying to get my alternator out and for some reason can't. I feel like I am missing something. I removed the adjustment bolt and the pivot. And it is still just haning there. I can swing it easily, but I can't get it out. I have a 92 SE. Also, what should I expect to pay for a new one? Please let me know..I need my car soon!

Look at where it is pivoting and see what is holding it in place.
