Active sound system not real active

Greetings all!

I have a question and hope someone can help me out.

I've got a 1994 GXE with the "Active Sound" system, and it is not working very well - only the rear speakers work and then not even that well.

The fronts used to work occassionally, almost like a loose wire or something - is this a common problem and any suggestions on making the repair?

My sister gave me a Awai "radio" I'd like to put in because I could use my MP3 player with it, but times being what they are, I'm in budget mode and if there are going to be big problems using the stock wiring/speakers, well, may just have to live with it as is.

Thanks in advance!

There will be no problem using the Awai with your stock wiring. Sosche makes an adapter harness that will work pretty easily. WalMart should sell the for about $10.

Take your door panels off and inspect the front speakers. Unless they're physically blown, there's no reason they shouldn't work, but even blown speakers usually will play (just sound crappy).

Thanks for the reply - I pulled the radio out of a Pathfinder (Nissan) so maybe, just maybe the adapter harness on it now will work.

Fricking stock radio, I try the fade and balance, no good at all, I'm hoping that it may be bad.

Thanks again!

Pulled the radio, Pathfinder harness does not match.

Picked up a new harness at Wally World and will install the new tune machine tonight.

Has to be one of the easiest to install radios ever!

Plugged in "new" system, front speakers still did not work.

Plugged old unit back in, front speakers worked momentarily.

Interesting.......

Here's an easy test. Pull out your door speakers and run them straight to the new head unit (you'll have to keep the head unit pulled out to do this). That'll let you rule out anything goofy wiring wise between the speakers and the head unit.

Might as well just replace those front door speakers anyway. Shouldn't be much more than $20 or so for a no-name replacement(s)

Entire sound system is now out. Sometimes it will come on for a moment, sure seems like a short somewhere. The station display light does not come on, other radio lights do work.

I want to go ahead and install the new(er) "radio", but have to ask - should i bipass the amp that is mounted in the trunk???
