I recommend that you get one from the Nissan dealer that fits a 3rd gen if you can afford it. Why would you want to put one on from a 4th or 5th gen??? They told you already that they don't fit so stick with one that does fit your year. If they dont' fit why would you want to know the difference between them? You're wasting your time and others!!! Oh, and I dont' recommend that you get one from Autozone cause they suck too. If anything get yours rebuild. Good Luck!

I dunno what this guy's reason is, but sometimes newer cars have better parts. For example in the 2nd gen RX-7 world you can upgrade to a later model alternator and get a lot more amperage (good for stereo equipment, etc). In order to swap you just need to change one or two electical connectors.

Autozone stuff does suck, but if you are on a budget and are good at swapping parts often... they can work :-) I went through 3 rebuild brake master cylinders for my car... finally #3 was a charm - been working now for 6 or 7 months :-) (I just refuse to pay the $235 for a master cylinder on my "beater" car)

BTW- I've had good luck with having alternators rebuilt. Usually this is a cheap alternative to OEM, and usually works very well. You just need to find an electrical shop that does it, usually takes a day or two once you give them the part. My old RX-7 was $90 to have it rebuilt. Much cheaper than OEM and even cheaper than Autozone / Pep Boyz.

Good luck,

No... I heard that they don't fit. I was just trying to give a logical reason as to why he might be asking the question.

A remanufactured alternator through most local parts stores is $60-100. I would recommend doing that. Most stores have a lifetime warranty on them too. if they offer it as an extra fee or something, go with it just in case. (I went through 3 alternators in the store until a good one came in. evidently they were never rebuilt properly from the rebuilder, so they didn't work from the git-go. I made them test all of them until I found one that worked correctly.)..

once I got that done, it was $79 and I was out the door. it lasted 3 years until I totalled my GXE. I tried to remove it for parts, but the case was cracked in the wreck.

As for what alternators fit what cars, ALL different engines have differnt alternators. the 4th gens actually have 2 or 3 models they can choose from (GXE had a 100 or 105 A stock. SE and GLE had a larger one stock.)

But the VG and VE 3rd gens have different alternators too. the amperage output AND the case are different. I tried the same thing when I thought my VE alternator was dying.. went to a parts store and they wanted $180 for a VE and $80 for a VG one. I asked to see them both and held them against each other. different mounting configurations. will not work.

Let me make this jsut a little bit clearer...

especially the BUY ONE FROM A DEALER part.
Uhhh, yeah.. The dealers only sell remanufactured alternators now. they don't sell new ones (no matter what the sales guy says. if he says it's brand new, then he's either lying, or they stole it off a car that came straight from the factory)

So why pay $295 for a 1-3 yr warranty at the dealer, when you can get the EXACT same remanufatured alternator at any parts store down the street for $89 with a lifetime warranty?
