Possible short? 89max

Hey guys I'm back with another shorting issue. I'm coming home from work and notice my dash lights blink or one two times, then the dash got brighter. The last time this happen I shorted out a few things in the car and the alternator was the culprit putting out a whopping 18vdc. I make it home and notice the minute I turn the car off but keep the ignition switch turned to allow the cabin power....I have no power. Same thing when getting ready to crank the car....no power until the car cranks and I turn the light switch. I replace the alternator and on a fully charge battery I'm getting 12.42vdc.....oh yeah no back brake lights either....please help me out guys.

Update, I tested at the alternator and I'm getting 15.2vdc. The starter has been acting funny as well, I have to turn the key a few times to get the car to crank. I hear clicks while trying to turn the car over....which probably is the starter gear trying to engage. I think I may have a bad ground.
