Starter problems

So I have now yet another bad starter. I think this one is a record as it crapped out on me in just 3 months. it is a rebuilt starter I picked up at a local carquest store back in Dec 2010 to put in my VE to replace the OTHER rebuilt starter that was already in there that also was dead (back from when i last drove the car in early 2009). Nothing happened when I turned the key today so thinking it was the starter to blame, I tapped it with a hammer while cranking it and it worked. But 9 times out of 10 now I have to keep tapping it to work.

anyone ever come across bad starters as often as this? are they really making/rebuilding starters that cheap and carelessly these days? what brand of starters does everyone have here? I see a few brands on rockauto but I want to find out which to go for.. thank god the VE 5spd starters are easy to replace but still

I'd say it's a little out of the norm, but it doesn't surprise me about remans.

Why buy a new/rebuilt one? VE 5 starters are the same as all VG starters. I've got a healthy supply of good OEM junkyard starters. Don't ever anticipate buying a new/aftermarket starter

you got a starter collection? Are you keeping them or looking to sell?

In my mind, ive always by default overlooked junkyard starters since the majority of them have very high miles on them given the age of these cars - my other VE (the stock one ) has the OEM starter but thats on its way out also

I'm hoarding all my OEM starters

I go with the junkyard ones because you can get a 30 day credit at my yard if one doesn't work. Plus, they're cheap enough that if one "only" lasts me a few years it's worth it

I actually did call a few local yards today to price hunt and weigh my options - $45, $50 were their prices. Going to go to carquest tomorrow and see if theyll take this one back, i bought it just over 90 days ago, 94 to be exact, 90 days seems like it would be the typical guarantee period if any.. nothing is specified on my receipt

In my experience remans usually are good for atleast 50 thou but I wouldn't be surprised if they crapped out on you in three months. Reman fuel pumps are known for only lasting a year or so and they taking a dump. I would just go to your local junk yard or even get a used OEM from somebody. If you can find a used Max with lower miles I'd go for that and save a little money at the same time.

Are you sure its your starter? I had an issue when I just got my car back from havin tranny installed. Somtimes it would start and sometimes it would do nothing. I tried hitting the starter and it worked a few times. But I found out it was something else after I took the starter apart, and had to get a junkyard one. It was the shifter bushing on the tanny gear selector. If it wasnt pushed up all the way, the car wont start.

a lil off topic but im interested in hearing more about this issue lol if the bushing wasnt pushed up all the way why would hitting your starter cause it to start i was a lil foggy on that.

Thats what happend to me. I came out one morning to start the car, and got nothing! I didnt know what to do. I looked at all the wiring under the hood, made sure the battery was clean of deposits. Then I remeber someone said to hit the starter, so I did that, and bam it started up. It did this several more times, until I got tired of it and got to the bottom of what was going on! I replaced the starter because I thought it was bad! The replacement starter did the same exact thing, So i ruled out the started being the problem. Then I remeber someone on here saying to push the shifter up, sometimes the bushings go bad or somthing, on the shifter cable. So I did this everytime, and she starts up everytime, no more hitting the starter lol!

Having a starter problem here also.. I'm hoping its just a pos reman that is at fault. I replaced the starter today and now its worse than before! The old starter would click, but every 5th try or so it would turn over. Now I'm just getting a loud click and I'm thinking/hoping its the starter hitting the flywheel (wrong gear/ # of teeth in the starter???) I'm going to try an exchange with the parts place I got the new starter from because I already gave them my core.... fingers crossed the next starter does the trick. If not I have no idea what it could be considering the starterwas intermittent before and now this new one does not start the car at all!!!
