Weird clunking sound when braking (axle problem?)

This problem was better before, if I brake hard there would be a clunking sound. Or if the car was carrying a lot of things, every time I brake something would clunk like two metal bars hitting.

Now the problem has gotten worse, the clunking sound happens every time I brake. My friend said it might be the axle, although I can't imagine what could be wrong with the axle to warrant such a symptom.

Does it clunk in a certain speed or as in every time you hit the brakes? Check the calipers. The pads may be loose which creates a gap to allow the pads to move in such directions, ergo, hitting the calipers. If you have the time, check the other wheels as well

Hmm. something is definitely loose. Its at any speeds, but its worse when I park. Like if the wheel is turned far left or right, theres a major clunk sound. I can't replicate it each time but it happens when I brake hard.

Sounds like wheel bearing or really rooted cv's. Does it squeal or grind or clatter at all?

Yeah, I'm almost positive that it has something to do with your pads or calipers.

Come to think of it I had a weird clunk similar to what your describing in the rear brakes of my first maxima, a fully optioned 92 gxe I think. Mechanic told me it was something to do with the 'clips' and since it only did it in reverse at low speed I never bothered to investigate it any further.
