power window switch - removeable from panel?

Hey guys,

Been doing a bit of googling on my concern already, but am left with an inconclusive answer.

In reference to my right side rear door, either the power window switch on that door, or on the master control panel up front for that door needs replacing. The window has a mind of its own and goes up and down at random as though there's a ghost in the car. It also does weird stuff if I try to put it down or up myself (pressing the button). I assume condensation or something has caused the contact points to get dirty over the yrs and now she's farked.

My solution so far is to press down the child lock button. This disables the rear window switches and the random up and down behaviour is no longer occuring. I wonder if this is enough evidence to assume that its the switch on that rear door that's the issue, and not the one up front?

In any case, my main question to you guys in the know is, is the actual switch itself able to be separated from the plastic door panel it mounts to. Ie. are there a pair of screws or something on the underside of that removable door panel that allow only the switch block to be replaced rather than having to replace the entire switch+panel? - I don't want to replace my existing door trim as I've customized it.

And I don't suppose any of you know the Nissan part number for this switch, do you? Once again, I can't seem to work this out from the google searching I have done.

Thanks for your assistance guys!

To remove the switch, first you have to remove all accessible screws from the door panel: 2 covered side screws with white spacers (driver only), 1 from the handle, 2 beneath the cover under the ****, and another one once you remove the handle itself. The switch panels are only attached to the door panel by one screw and it has snap-on metal edges. To remove the switch itself, i think there are 2 screws that attach it to the switch panel. Yes, you can just replace the switch alone without replacing the panel.

This is the driver's switch from Autozone.http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...841_2137_9258_
This one from Oreilly is $50 cheaper than Autozone [Part # 901-802]
25401-85E00 SWITCH ASSY-POWER WINDOW, MAIN (that's the part no. and description for a 93 SE driver's)
25421-85E0 SWITCH ASSY-POWER WINDOW, ASSIST (non-driver's switch)

Does it really randomly goes up and down or every time the car is on? Try to disconnect the rear's switch and check if it still does that. It's easy to remove a switch and remove its button (just don't lose the mini metal thing and the spring beneath it If something doesn't seem right, it can be the culprit.

Could be either the master or the slave switch causing the problem..

yeah just remove the handle and the switch and plate comes out (kinda hard to explain this so look for a diagram online or something)by pulling back towards rear on the plate and sliding a thin flathead under the front of it to push back the metal springy clip and lift up

yeah I tried to pull the whole thing out at the junkyard the other day, i played with it for a while, but it wasn't what I needed so I gave up. It is kind of stingy though.

Thanks guys - And ta for all the part #s etc. Laevateinn - a great help!

And nah it doesn't randomly go up and down when the car's off.. only when accessories is on or the car's running (ie. when the power window buttons are active).

"Try to disconnect the rear's switch and check if it still does that"

Yeah I will try that first to isolate which switch is the issue before I go and purchase a new switch. Then I'll know whether I need to buy the switch for the front master panel or the one at the rear door.

Thanks again!

I don't remember if pulling the door switch will stop it from working. easy enough to check I guess. pull it and try it out.

I'm pretty darn sure the plugs are the same for all the passenger doors, so you can at least swap the switches on the rear windows and see if that causes the problem to change sides. If so, there's your culprit.

I think swapping the switches is a good method to isolate.

Power Window 'Switch'

I need to catch up with terminology. When talking about 'switch', are you referring to the main electrical unit in each door which operates the up & down of the window? Just recently, my driver's window has been very slow in going back up, sounding like the window was being obstructed. Yesterday, the back window, on driver's side, would not go back up. However, I heard the power unit trying to work. Finally, because the threat of rain, I had to push the window up with my hand but it would not stay closed. It would always fall about ten inches. Ended up placing some plastic over the window during the night. Took it to a garage this morning which I trust with all my repair work and they told me that the "unit" in both doors would have to be replaced. I believe they said the cost was about $250 per door. Are they referring to the electrical motor that operates the window, and does this amount sound right?
Thanks,
Allen

Your problem is the window regulator has broken- very common in these cars.
there's nothing wrong with the electrical part. the regulator is the mechanical part- it's a metal bracket that the motor mounts to and some cables and bushings that pull the window up and down as the motor turns.

The problem with these units is the end pieces are plastic. with age, they get hard and brittle. then the window tracks get dirty and causes more drag on the window glass. this combination causes the plastic bits to break and your window drops like you've described. The newer units have better parts and an improved design so they shouldn't break again.

Last time I checked, they were about $75 each from the dealer. A shop will want about 1 hr labor to swap them, but I used to change them all the time in about 15 minutes.

looks like prices have gone up..

If you can turn a screwdriver and read instructions, then you can change it yourself. there are instructions posted somewhere in the stickies at the top of this forum. or maybe just search for "window regulator" in this forum.

Also check prices at parts stores- I know they sold these things online much cheaper than the dealer for a while, but I don't know about the quality of them- I always repaired mine with duct tape and baling wire.
