i had a msd blaster ss coil on mine for a while made a aluminum bracket to hold it. then i went to a msd 6al box with the coil and it started burning the contacts of the dis cap and rotor button up was changing them every couple months no one does a cap with brass terminals they offer a brass terminal rotor.

if you have a single coil and a distributor, a) yes you can upgrade, and b) you have a vg

however, without other serious mods, ignition upgrades have been proven not to be any more beneficial than a standard tune up.

they exist, but not alot of bang (well, bang-improvement) for the buck. the money would be better spent on a 5spd swap if you want more power to reach the wheels.

I'm using a Mallory ignition system (coil and control box) and I hate Nissan epoxy coils which fail but test good but have alot of misses in the midrange during high manifold pressure and I've used this same fix to cure the Nissan coil horror story on my dual plugged 86.5 Nissan Hardbody Z24i! I simply replaced the 2 OEM coils with MSD Blaster (Ole School oil filled coils) 10 yrs ago and I have never touched them since...My 1990 VG has a Mallory 6a box and huge oil filled coil....My throttle response was super responsive and I run 15 degrees BTDC with no problems....

Sorry for the delay of my response but GREENY BANNED me this is my first day back....No big deal man with that....I would a least change the coil! Oil filled coils lasted forever back in the day...these new smaller epoxy coils seem to have a shorter lifespan IMO.....
