how long does it take to replace...
hey guys!
i was wondering if any one has any idea how long it takes a mechanic to replace the two rear shocks? any ideas? i am trying to figure how much it is gonna cost me to get them replaced. my best estimate so far is $200 and that is with my own shox. i bought KYB's from nopi. any good? also a couple more quick questions: is it ok to drive out of O/D while in town? also if i were to add a tranny cooler is there any way i could bypass it to "turn it off" in the winter? thanks guys.

Re: how long does it take to replace...
My mechanic took 3 hrs to replace both front AND rear struts and springs ($150). Granted, he is a family friend and may have undercharged me, but it seemed reasonable.

how come you want to drive out of O/D? i think its "ok", but it may be just a matter of a little extra stress...or fuel economy.

well, the only reason i was thinking about trying to bypass the cooler is to make sure it warms up ok in the winter, but if it diesnt bother it that much i think ill justput it on. was it very hard to install? how much was it? i will probably get the same cooler u got. as for the o/d ? it feels like when i have it off its a little peppier esp off the line. maybe not tho. on the highway its always on of course, but i thought it might give it a little extra somethin for in town drivin.thanks for the good replies guys!

O/D
For the O/D: The Overdrive "gear" causes the transmission to lug more. When you turn it off, the tranny is actually less stressed at lower RPMs/speeds because the gearing isn't as low. This is why you turn it off on steep grades and while towing. The downside is that at high speeds, you are spinning at higher RPMs, which uses more fuel and may reduce the life of the tranny in the long run. I turn O/D off when I'm zipping around town at speeds less than 50 MPH.

Oh yeh, bro, totally do it yourself, you can do it in 30minutes. The only real trick was getting the grille off, but that was before i realized it only snaps out! Then, get the diagram that comes with the cooler and follow directions. (After draining the fluid) all you are really going to do is, take on of the small hoses at the bottom, either the out or inbound hose (i think i did the one closest to the big radiator lower hose) and ran the new hose (from kit) to the new cooler. Mount it behind the grille (on the driver side worked for me) and run the other new hose to the attachment that you removed from the radiator before. I have the 92gxe, there isnt any difference in where everything is between our radiators either, so...
but yeh, good luck! and save the 40 dollars!

Re: COOLA
Doesn't O/D allow you to shift into 4th gear? I'm pretty sure it does, but if I'm wrong, don't bash me for it. All it's really good for is conserving fuel and towing/going uphill (that's what it was meant for). Racing-wise, it just lets the RPM's idle higher and performs a tad better in lower gears.
If ya wanna pretend you drive a 5spd, just go from 1-2-D-O/D. It's best to just leave it in Drive and wait until you're nearly redlining it in 3rd, then click O/D on. It shifts into 4th and you're on your way.
I wouldn't know because I've never raced someone to speeds that required the tranny to shift into 4th. The only time I'm ever in 4th gear is on the highway, and I have O/D on then anyway. I'm just goin by what I've heard.

The O/D button is nothing special. On ALL cars that have it it's just basically asking: "Do you want to use 4th Gear, or not?" ON is yes, OFF is no.
If you just drive around town at moderate speeds and steady traffic you could just leave it ON. But if traffic is heavier and you don't want the car shifting in and out of overdrive (4th gear) so much (speed changes, bursts of power, etc.) then you might want to leave it OFF. Definitely leave it ON on the highway.
btw, just some FYI here: The lower gears like 1 and 2 have "low" or "short" gearing and give higher RPM. The higher gears like 3 and 4 (or 4 and 5 in a 5-speed) have "high" or "tall" gearing and give lower RPM. Important? No, but it's good to get terminology straight incase it's handy someday.
