Delayed 3-4 Upshift When Cold
I'm a little concerned about the automatic transmission in my 1992 GXE. When cold (mornings or after sitting at work all day), it delays the initial 3-4 upshift for as long as a minute, causing the engine to rev to around 3000 rpm at 50 mph (as fast as I'll go until the temp gauge has climbed a bit). Once it finally does shift, the problem does not recur until the car has been parked and allowed to cool down fully again. This is admittedly a minor annoyance, but I have to wonder if it doesn't betoken some more serious mechanical or electrical problems. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

According to the FSM, the fluid temp operating range is 50-80C (122-176F). OD will not be engaged until then. You really have to drive the car to get the temp up.

This is normal. The tranny doesn't engage 4th gear till the temp goes over 147*F.

Delated-shifting tranny (cold weather)
OK, now how about a trans with delayed upshift from 2-3 and also from 3-4 but only when the ambient temp is below about 45deg F? This tranny shifted normally at all temps for the first 5 or so years but has gradually begun to do this delayed shift thing for the last two years.
The tranny oil has been changed periodically since the car was new.
I don't like to rev the engine too much when it's cold and I don't want to wait while the machinery warms up......besides, idling is not healthy for a gas engine.
My guess is that there may be worn seals in the valve assembly somewhere especially if there are spool valves in there somewhere that are sealed with o-rings. Any other suggestions? Is this a common problem?
