i posted something no one ever heard of the problem i guess. well heres another question if ne knows. car has a rough start, recently when i start it. it makes the noise when u already have the car on and turn the key to start it again. after it makes the noise, it starts like nothing?? ne thoughts?

 

It's a horrible vvvvvtt! grinding noise right? I think this has something to do with the starter motor gears engaging the flywheel properly but I can't concentrate right now.

How did you change a timing chain on a car that doesn't have a timing chain?

You could actually get some decent money if you sell it to a new driver. Some kid who just got their license and needs a car for cheap. Sell it too them for a grand and call it a day!

 

1. charge the battery/ jump start the car.

2. see if the noise goes away.

3. if yes, then have batt and alternator tested and replace the bad one(s).

is no, then have the starter checked.

it has absolutely nothing to do with the timing belt.

You mean the car is trying to turnover (start) but doesnt, then you try it again and it starts up fine?

If that is what your saying, i still ahve the same prob on my 3rd gen. I've had this problem for about 3 years now. Everything has been replaced (usual maintenance) and i still have this prob.

Sounds to me like the starter pinion is not engaging the flywheel. Nissan starters are not the best...

I had a similar issue with my Altima...Lots of Altimas have starter problems.

I would recommend changing the starter, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks! This is what I meant, but haven't had time to look it up. There's a clutch of some sort for this, but I'm unsure if that's the exact cause. Probably simpler to replace the whole starter assembly anyway rather than trying to fix parts of it.

I have a guess, it could be the starter or ignition relay that needs to be replaced.

 

We had a guy on Altimas.net buy the parts to fix his starter, and it turned out he saved like $15, but he didn't get the warrantee he would have gotten with a new one...which in my mind is well worth $15.

my 94 gxe makes that same noise from time to time as well. a grinding noise just like if you were to turn the key *again* after the car is already running.

the first time it did this was the first really cold night here, only makes the grinding sound after it's been sitting in the cold for really long.

...i'm wondering if this is just the sound the maxima makes, i mean a grinding sound usually is not a good thing in any instance. but what car really sounds good starting up on a 20 degree day..i don't have a garage, so my max is really exposed to the elements.

No, the grinding noise isn't normal. Like I said, it's like a sharp, grinding vvvvvvttt!! like when trying to crank a running motor right? Even when it gets really cold (like -25 C) it shouldn't do this. (It might crank over really slowly though, but won't grind.)

 

thanx for the input, its just doing it when its cold out. im just gonna let it be for now, the starter is like 8 months old. if the flywhel does not engage why would it still start??

 

Could be just a flaky intermittent problem. Things like that happen.

Are you saying that the car is running and you turn the key to start it again, or that you turn it off after it has been running and start it again it grinds?

 

no no, its happening when i first start it, it makes the noise a lil bit compared to the first time it happened. i turn the key makes sound similar to the sound when car is on and u turn the key again. after the sound starts up ok. i have a rough start when its cold. plus i have a short somewhere, im thinking its all related. wondering if one of those diagnostic tests could tell me exactly whats the prob? would it tell me wheres the short? lol

 

Sounds like the starter solenoid is slow to engage the pinion gear, or the pinion gear is getting stuck before it engages the flywheel.

The solenoid is what pushes the pinion gear to engage the flywheel. Normally, when you turn the key, it pushes the pinion over quickly as the starter begins to turn. However, if the pinion gear doesn't make it all the way over, then the starter will be spinning it furiously, and it could grind against the flywheel before finally engaging. The grinding is what makes that loud noise.

Well, that's my theory anyway.

 

There may be somthing wrong with the solenoid that powers the starter. It may be also so to disengage, so that after you stop cranking, power may still be going to the starter.

 

I'm telling you guys.. it's the battery. charge the battery overnight on a charger, then try to start the car. it'll fire right up with no nasty noises.
