Rise and Shine little guy
Its time to wake the beast!
After spending the last two winters out of the garage (had to make room for the M5) it is time to give the Max a little love and attention. I plan on conducting a full inspection, to include compression and leak down test. I have a spare ve on a stand that I might rebuild if I discover the engine to be unhealthy. Up until recently the Max has been garaged most of its life and has never seen any salt. The paint is getting a little tired after almost 20 yrs but luckily the Max has no rust issues. Hopefully the engine checks out so I can allocate most of my budge on a fresh coat of paint. Between work, family, and a 300zx twin gt30r project ; I'm expecting to have the Max ready by this summer.

Excellent, I am jealous. My max has been sitting in the garage for almost a year with a bad clutch and I have been putting off fixing it for a long time. I am starting to miss driving it, since now it's the only vehicle I have that is a manual trans.
I do like my BMW, but it's an AT and AWD, so it's not that quick and mostly just fun in the corners or in the snow with the traction control turned off.

**** yeah man. I was thinking the past year or two that you'd lost interest/moved on. That first pic is sweet! It's almost like you're literally unleashing a beast
Glad to know you're getting back into it!

Funny thing is I came home from work the other day and the wind must have blown the cover half off. It was like the car was calling me. Gave me the wierdest feeling, got the camera out and took the picture. I have been thinking about her ever since.

That shiney silver thing is a wastegate (part of the turbo system that regulates boost pressure)

What ever happen to your max? I used love the way your car looked with the blacked out intercooler and carbon fiber hood.

I would expect the compression test to reveal low numbers but I am mainly interested with seeing similar numbers across the board. I might just put her on the road and conduct a second test after couple hundred miles like you suggested.

Dynoed about 5-6yrs ago 410whp & 452tq @ 14 psi. I'm sure I could of made over 500whp but was afraid of grenading the tranny for the 3rd time.

nice, did it run good when parked?

I used AEM EMS for tuning. I had put the AEM in my Z when I parked it and resorted to using one of my earlier tuning methods to get the car running without the AEM. I am considering exploring the option of using a powerfc in the future since I am confident I can make it work in the Max.

You didnt have to mill the rotors at all? THe guy I bought them from had them on a 4th gen as well and he had to mill them 2mm. What kind of rotors do you have on there? what car are they originally for? size brand etc etc?

They are 3rd gen Mitsu 3000gt vr4 rotors. No modification needed for the rotors to fit. I went with these instead of the more popular cobra 13" rotors due to the cobra rotors requiring hubcentric rings. You would need a custom relocation bracket which I can have duplicated for around $200. PM me if you are interested.

For my birthday if the moneys correct (at least I hope it will be) I'm gonna buy me a Hobart welder. You two are making me consider my original plan when I got the car of going turbo. That way I could fab up my own exhaust manifolds.

Almost got rid of it after buying the M5 (the car I tried to emulate when I built the max) but I coundn't let her go. Hey Matt is your old max still in the barn? If so you should have it "Rise and Shine" too

My turbo VG having one. Very soon new built heads and cams going on tomorrow.

Yup still have it. Bought the car in 96 while in the service. Back in the day I was attempting to be the 1st ve turbo 3rd gen on this forum but had to put the project on hold due to an emergency deployment during 9/11. A guy name Czar beat me to it. He became the first to turbo a VE on this forum by hanging a small t3 turbo on the front bank. Then If I recall Julio, you, James92se and Brad92se followed a few yrs later with turbo VE monsters. I'm happy to say this old max has been boosting for 11yrs now and the motor has held together after over 75k miles of force induction.

LOL. I have an E46 M3 (Sig) now and I just installed an ESS Supercharger Kit.
