Timing VG30E

Timing VG30E
Alright, so here's the deal. My buddy blew the HG on his VG30E due to a bad thermostat, we broke it down for the repair. Now we are at the point of installing the timing belt; however, the cam was accidentally rotated during removal. Luckily, no valves struck a piston, but it means we have to time the cams from scratch. I can't find any information on how to do so, every write up just says "Make sure you don't rotate the cam independently of the crank" but contains no information otherwise.
If we set the motor to TDC, and align the cam sprocket to the punch marks, the left hand (front) bank aligns fine, all valves appear to be closed in this situation. If we align the right hand (rear) bank, the intake valve on the #1 cylinder is almost fully extended instead of closed. Is this correct? Is it possible to be 360* off on the cam timing? I guess it seems too simple that way to be correct, and I'd feel much better verifying it.
