3rd Gen Max Display Problem

I posted this on a newsgroup as well: alt.autos.nissan.maxima

I have a 1990 Max SE with the Digital Display. I have posted before about
the problem and have realized mostly that it is a bad solderinig job on the
circuit board or has something to do with the powersupply. This Max is all I
have. I have heard that some people (few) have repaired this problem
themselves. I can't roll around town not knowing exactly how fast I am
going. I was wondering if the repair is cheap (just getting the local Nissan
dealer to even look at it cost a bit too much) at secondary store and/or if
I can repair it my self. I have soldering experience. If it is possible I
just need to know how to repair this problem (I have a service manual for
this car, but I may also need to know how to get the display out of it place
if I need to). And is it easier to install I new digital display if I find
one (or what about a regular analog display). Thanks alot people I REALLY
need to figure out what I am going to do. I live in a city with alot of
Maxima's but the only experts are at the dealers (makin me sick).

God, you are lucky to have that digital display. I would KILL for one of those! I don't even care that I'd have to rewire and rig up so much stuff + replace some of my stuff with the same parts from a Max that has the display. It would all be worth it. Kamikaze, I just thought I should let you know that as a last resort you can check http://www.carparts.com I saw the digital display (whole gauge cluster of course) on there and it was expensive (around $300) but, if you couldn't find any other way to fix it, that could be a last resort. $300 is better than how much they'd charge you, to fix it, at the dealership I assume. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

More Information I Have

I have noticed that when my display is not working. . . my cruise control AND my sonar suspension control does not function at all. I am not sure what other components do not work (if any). Are all of these devices connected to the same power supply? Is this where the problem may be? In the power supply to the digital display, cruise, and sonar suspension control?

Re: 3rd Gen Max Display Problem

the digital display consist of two parts the display and the
electronic controle unit, its behind the display ,this e unit is
mostly the problem.
you also say that when the display is not working your sonar and
cruise is not oke ,than you should check if your car computer is oke.
did you smell something (burning)when your display got a blackout.

I have a '90 GXE that has a digital dash that does not work all of the time, I have noticed that when the dash is cold it does not work, and along with it my cruise control (my Sonar suspension just sucks all by itself and I am looking at replacing it with something that does). But when it warms up, it comes on and works fine, plus it starts recording mileage again.

There was a post sometime back with elaborate pics and explanation on how to fix the digital dash display problem...its on somebody's wesbite but i cant find it. there are two points on the circuit board that need to be resoldered to fix this...run a search here.

btw...why did nissan stop putting that awesome digital dash and especially that VERY useful Heads-Up display on its cars????
