what are the pro's and cons of rebuilding a vg verse's the ve i have a spare vg in the garage and i can score a ve from the junkyard for 150 164xxx miles. im talking in terms of aftermarket performance boost/spray opinions please

Yeah the vtcs will talk but theres 2 ways around that. Either ghetto rig them (ground them out) or rebuild them. You sacrifice something from one motor to the next. VE: chain driven & direct ignition with 190hp VG: no vtc clack, easier for turbo build and more readily available. Its all preference.
IMO, the VG is just simply a more raw and moldable engine. So simple and easy to work on. As mentioned, aftermarket stuff for the engine is out there more so than the VE. You're going to avoid a lot of issues modding what your car is already fitted for, the VG.
The only complaint I'd have with the VG is the timing belt. However, that is a non-issue really if built properly. I mean, the VG30DETT is even belt driven. I'd just suggest if you have the square tooth belt, upgrade to the better round tooth belt (along with crank and cam components). Either way you go, do not skimp on replacing the oil pump....ask me how I know!

see thats the thing i have three VG's 94 gxe 90 se and a spare one with a 5spd trans four if you wanna include my old J30
If you want to go turbo then a VG is the better option seeing as its been done before and can use parts from a z31 turbo. If want to be different then you could do a VE. It also has been done before but not in a while. Don't think any current members have one at this time. More after market for the VG since it was made up until 03. VE has more top end & vvt. Both are fun to work on, just these days the market is more in favor of the VG.

VG33 is an option. Most don't consider it.

I run 100% stock bottom end heads ported polished schnieder cams /springs with Holset he351 on 18psi holding together well and I beat it pretty good. If going boost spend the money where needs to and do NOT cut corners!
Can't tell you what is best. Going to be what you want to achieve mixed with choice and combination of injectors, cams, compression, engine management, and other supporting mods.
I suggest Corky Bells book on boosting. Might help with formulating what you want into what needs to be done to accomplish.

Depends alot on what you are building car for goals in mind etc. GT35R depending on turbine size you go with will spool nicely. My Holset is similar in size and I see full boost by 3500rpm.
Does the DOHC and the VTC system on the VE make for a harder time with turbo set up?
On the VG how is turbo on the trans? I assume a 5spd is essential. How can a 5spd trans be built to reliably handle 350-400+ hp?

You need to prepare for some low end losses.
I'm out of touch with companies that build trannys. Level 10 was the thing back when I did my build, but I want to say they are gone, NOT certain. There are cryo treatments forthe gears and internals. You'll just have to search or maybe someone has current info for guidance.
Otherwise, need to go with a VE 5sp. Has beefier axles and an LSD to get the power to both wheels and the ground. Performance clutches are a dime a dozen. For a VE 5sp, you'll just need to swap out the hubs with tranny and axles. You'll also need to ensure you've got the 5sp carrier bracket for the passenger axle if you are currently an automatic.

The VTCs shouldn't effect the spool much. If any I believe it would help. (not 100% accurate about that) check with either James or Brad for verification on that.

thanks fellas im not really shooting for extreme numbers but just enough to stirr the coffee and walk away for people when need be honestly i'll be happy with 250/ 275 if its higher than that when its all said and done is still good i was looking at this one here

There may be no official write up. However, at least a few guys have images of their builds up on cardomain. I know my images are there. Will give you ideas, then you choose what fits your goals and budget.

Yes, I would like to go turbo. I'm not sure how soon I can do it given budget concerns. As stated elsewhere I am still working on getting my old VG auto back, and then looking to buy a VE5 trans and swap parts and install that. I also have leads on a whole VE5 car for fairly cheap that needs some work and a built VE engine that I may also get. I was thinking originally to swap in a whole VE5 drivetrain in my old Silver '89 GXE with the built motor to get the best N/A performance possible, but now with the VE5 car available I may try to just keep the VG engine and go turbo with that later while doing the VE build in the VE car ;-) The only problem is I don't actually need two Maximas.... The wife probably won't like it. I plan to put in around $2500-$3000 for both cars. There's also a cool '96 BMW 318ti 5spd available for $1k, so what to do. Too many options - not enough money/time/space....

Well, if I end up getting both cars, VG and VE, I'll probably use the built VE motor for N/A and turbo the VG. It's all theoretical until I get the car(s) in hand. Waitin' for a DWMH to sell before I have cash for anything.
