Re: need a refresher

On top of his question, I was wondering why the computer wouldn't retard the timing if you advance it? My mechanic seemed to think this would be the case since the computer controls the ignition. Thanks.

this is just one reason. as long as the ecu does sense any "knock" it wont pull timing..you can advance the timing anywhere but the more you do the more of a chance you will encounter "knock"..

You need to turn the crankshaft position sensor, which is located at the end of the front cyl head (just in front of the throttle body).
Clockwise to advance, CCW to retard. Just remember to re-tighten the screws when you're done! Spec (for '93 anyway) is 15 deg +/- 2 deg BTDC.

so if i advance my timing and i do get a ping/knock, the ECU will retard the timing to where the engine doesnt knock anymore?

also, i have no special tools (no timing light), how should i advance my timing? i have a haynes manual so i can find the crank angle sensor (isnt this the same as crank position sensor? if not, let me know) i mean, how would i know when its advanced enough?

one more time, the ECU will correct whatever i do wrong if i advance it too much and it pings right?

sidenote: i only use premium from mobil (93 octane)

thanks

i noticed today that if i use half regular mobil gas (87 oct) and half premium gas (93) it will average out cheaper than using just super gas (89) and it will also ave. higher octane, 90. so it's actually cheaper and better to use half regular and half premium than all super, if you used 89 anyway. i think i got the names right...

never thought of it that way. i used to use plus (89) and found that i got alright gas mileage..then i got poor and used regular (87) for exactly one tank and found i got terrible mileage and the max ran very odd. so i swtiched to premium and i cant complain. when i get poor again i'll try mixing.
