Maxima Owner by association.
Whats up party people. New guy here. I must admit off the bat. I don't own a Maxima, but my little cousin does. And she's pretty naive at these things so i'm posting on her behalf.
So she purchased a 1994 Maxima GXE according to the VIN and from what i've been able to find, it means it's a SOHC motor. Unless i'm wrong, at which point the motor mounts I ordered will have to be returned.
Anyways....a few questions...
1. Her odometer/trip meter doesn't work. Speedometer works though. Is this a simple fix? Dunno how long it's been broken. Plus we didnt even notice it was broken until a few days after the car was purchased. It's stuck at 149k miles.
2. What years are compatible with the 1994 as far as parts? I went to the local "pick-a-part" and bought a replacement rear tail light housing for her car because the other one was in pretty rough shape and a few of her bulbs didn't work even after replacing them, and the wires looked a little burned. So i purchase the plastic tail light housing, the one that sits behind the tail light lens and it came off a 91 maxima, but it doesnt fit. So now i gotta go back to the junkyard and try to find a different one. Is the 1994 the only year of vehicle that parts can come off?
3. I found a link that guides through how to reset the door lock codes for the key pads on the doors:
http://www.ehow.com/how_7591073_rese...an-maxima.html
Has anyone done this?
4. Her automatic antenna is broken. Is it possible to replace with one of the static antenna? If so, what vehicle should i look at pulling one from.
That's it for now. As this is the first nissan in our family, I'm sure i'll be on here regularly asking questions....and yes...some of them will probably be dumb.

yes you have SOHC
parts compatible? 89-94, anything but 92-94SE engine parts
there are 2 styles of taillights, well 4 actually, but the reason your bulb holder wont fit is because the bulb holder pairs with certain tails(old or new): either 89-91 or 92-94. You can use any of the taillights on your car, you just have to have the corresponding bulb holder
I wrote a how-to on resetting the door keypads years ago, its fairly easy to do, I believe theres a link in my signature

all 89-94 parts are interchangeable except 92-94, twin cam engine and tranny combo was different on SE then. but 92-94 GXE will still interchange with 89-91. 89-91 just had a few cosmetic differences, the centerpiece on the trunk lid was lighter and the roof height was something like almost a inch higher compared to 92-94
as long as the radio still works, i wouldnt worry about the antenna. mine didnt retract or expand either but the radio still worked. if the radio doesnt work because of the antenna, parts stores sell aftermarket ones

Hey all...
Thanks for all the responses thus far.
I was able to get her keypad reprogrammed and it's pretty nifty. I will say, pulling the glove box is way easier then trying to look under the dash. Her code was on a sticker, easy to see with the glove box pulled, plus, I replaced her glove box light anyways. Two birds, one stone.
I guess now the car is starting to smell like gas. She said her gauge isn't acting abnormal. So I'm gonna have to figure out where the smell is coming from.
I went ahead and ordered three new motor mounts and a transmission mount...only got one of the tranny mounts, cause that's all rockauto had listed, but from doing a bit more research, I guess there are two transmission mounts? Anyone able to confirm this?
Local pick-a-part has a 92 or 93 maxima with a gauge cluster in tact and it's all white face gauges. Might go out there sometime this week and see what they want for it. If i remember ,the Odometer is showing like 198k miles, which i think is fine, and I told my cousin that she'll never really know how many miles her car has on it. Too bad there isn't really a way to tell. like a tree with it's rings. I'll probably pull her dash apart first and make sure everything is hooked up like it should be and none of the connections came loose.
As far as the tail lights go.. I found the right light bulb housing and got that switched in there, but there is a new issue with that. All her tail lights work just fine, but when she hits the brakes, her left innermost break light doesn't work. The bulb is new, and i've even tried a few different bulbs in there. Originally, there was a broken wire on the two prong harness but I fixed that, plugged it back in thinking that was the issue and it turns out not to be. I'm thinking there has to be a short somewhere, but it's weird it would only affect one side, one bulb. Unless the socket itself is bad, which is also a possibility.
Here's a riddle: How do you open the truck without a key, and if the button on the door doesn't work? I ask this because there's one at the junk yard and the trunk is closed. And i dunno how else to open it, unless I pop the lock, which i dunno if they'd like that, since they can make money on the lock.
I had another question but i can't remember. I'll post another reply if i remember it.

VG are notorious for a fuel line having problems towards the firewall, if it smells like gas bad especially when its cold outside thats probably whats up
there should be a thread buried somewhere here in the 3rd gen section on how to roll forward or roll back a 3rd gen odometer as well, shouldnt be too hard if you want to get it close
if you can pop the trunk lock, go for it. at least over here, people will do ***** out anything to get what they want in a vehicle. i found a family vehicle in the junkyard right when it got there, out of respect i was able to get in and i locked all the doors because i didnt really want people getting parts out of it. some guy was desperate enough to smash the rear window and crawl in to tear the dash part lol

i cant exactly remember where the fuel line is off the top of my head, but last time i saw it happen was on a Pathfinder with VG, it was leaking towards the firewall near the brake booster. dont know where the line is on front drive VG, but its a common problem on both
if you replace the odometer, rolling it back isnt too hard

one thing i noticed tonight actually, was I loosened the gas cap and it made the same sound as it would if the car was running on fumes....the only thing was, the car had half a tank of gas.
My plan is to blow out the vent lines and of course, inspect the gas lines too.
