93 Maxima VG30E - Rocker Valve Cover

Hey Guys,

I'm going to be tackling the rocker/valve covers gaskets on my 93 SOHC.

The questions I have =
1. Do I need to remove the intake to get to the front (closest to radiator) valve cover?
2. Do I need to remove EGR?
3. Do I need to remove anything specific to get to the rear (closest to rear firewall) valve cover?

Thanks for your Input.

To do the rear upper intake must be removed, pull the EGR tube where it connects to the UIM. You should do the PCV while ypu're in there. If you need to ask these question, maybe you should get help in doing it.

Hello A-M,

Thanks for your reply - It's not a matter of whether I can do the job. I just want to make sure that I have all the parts I need to do the job. As of right now I only have the valve cover parts - I have seen posts from other stating that doing the valve cover job in 20 minutes - and removing the upper intake seems to add more than 15 minutes to the project. Maybe I'm just slow.. LOL -

Do I just need the upper intake gasket?

Thank you for suggesting that I replace to PVC as well.

Your help is definitely appreciated!!

Yes, you will need to remove the upper intake. You may want to be prepare to replace some of those old worn vacuum hoses under the throttle body. If the ends are rotted and split, they don't have a lot of length to play with.

You will also have to pull the distributer. Take off the cap first and then mark center where the rotory button sits to ensure its facing the right direction when re-installed.

Be mindful of those plastic wire harness clips, they are brittle at this age and likely to break.

Have a LARGE ended Philips for the valve cover screws or you may strip them upon removal. Take your time breaking them loose using firm downward pressure when twisting. Sliding a small boxes end wrench up along the shaft of the driver will help give some additional leverage as you maintain downward pressure on the valve cover screws.

Just a thin layer of black silicone gasket maker is all that is necessary to hold the intake gasket in place. A thin layer on the head doesn't hurt either.

I typically lay the intake manifold bolts in the shape of the intake so I can remember which one goes where. They are different lengths.

This may also be a good opportunity to see if your vias is working. If not, just disable it. You can also stick the vias into either the always open or always closed position, your call if its busted.

With the valve covers off, might be a good opportunity to clean and repaint them.....back original or color of your choosing.

The big emission hose with a couple of 90degree bends are prone to breaking upon removal as they get hard/brittle...be careful removing.
