1994 transmission problem
1994 about 110,000 mi. auto transmission
this morning when i started the car the and put trans into drive the gear would not engage. put car into reverse and car was fine. put into d2 and d1 and car drove fine.
car has never had any transmission problem before.
any suggestions on what the problem might be and where should i take car to be fixed.
thanks

mine did the same thing, as Danny said its the shifter bushing. last time i bought one from Nissan it was 3 bucks. you just remove the exhaust heat shield and replace the bushing, takes 5 minutes. until then if you rock the shifter a bit in D, it should engage. very common part to wear out

My previous 3rd gen was a 94 VE auto, I still remember the first day I brought it home. Stopped by a buddy's house and as I was leaving I put It in reverse and got nothing. Scared the shiit out of me. It always had the occasional moment when you had to bump it to get it to engage reverse, but I never knew about that bushing.

even if you dont know cars that well its easy to replace, you just unbolt a heat shield above the exhaust under the car, the shield is located almost directly below where the shifter is up inside the car. you slide the shield out, place it aside, and remove whats left of the old bushing (probably nothing) and slip the new bushing on. bolt the exhaust heat shield on again with a hoist i can change one in 5 minutes
if youre still not comfortable doing it yourself, you can get the part from Nissan yourself and take it to a garage and tell them where the bushing is located and they can do it. i replaced one on a 3rd gen at work a couple years ago

did you change it out yourself?
there should really be a sticky in the 3rd gen section on this, very common problem as these cars age. almost wonder how many bad shifter bushings got diagnosed as a failing transmission

Part was like $5.40 at Courtesy Nissan as of a couple weeks ago. They had to special order it and took 2 days to arrive. In the writeups I've seen there is mention of 2 washers by the shifter bushing. When I replaced it I only found one. Did you'll have 1 or 2 washers on the shift linkage?
