Help...automatic shifter stick does not make contact to start engine

Help needed.
My automatic transmission Maxima 89 GXE have a problem with the shifter stick.
When I put it on park, it engages Ok, but when I try to start the engine again it does not make contact on the starter lock, so I have to move the sticker a little bit down and try again to start. Sometimes the key does not even turn to unlock the steerinng wheel.
I took the car to a mechanich and told me thatt the problem seems to be on some rubber gaskets on the attachment underneath the car, from the shifter to the trasnmission.
Does somebody knows if this looks logical, and what kind of part is normally damaged.?
Thanks. apreciate your help
HL

Sounds like a shifter bushing issue. They get worn. A couple $ part and ~ $50 in labor if you're not a DIY.
