My stupid old car!

Anyways, my car is having a reoccurring problem.
It seems every time I start my car, put it into DRIVE, and give it some gas it feels as if the car is about to stall out.
As soon as I get going (2nd gear) the car runs as normally. However,
when come to a stop and have to start again, the same problem occurs - to a lesser degree.
What gives?
Could it be the tranny? At 138k, that seems like an obvious solution, but it feels like the problem is engine-related.

Please help me!

changed your plugs lately?
wonder if the plugs are getting old and it's causing you to lose low rpm performance.. i.e. when you stab the gas at idle, the plugs foul out and the engine bogs..

the only other things I can think of are low fuel pressure (shouldn't happen)

or the tranny is going.

try just driing around the neighborhood in 1st gear for a bit and see what happens after 5-10 minutes of that.

Did it, driving around in 1st (intake/y-pipe blaring).

Now that you mention it, it seems that the plugs are the solution. I had replaced the wires and alternator, but not the plugs, a year ago.

Low fuel pressure - I do have the standard, minimal mods...and it may be time for me to replace the fuel lines.

Tranny - Don't scare me like that!

Thanks pal.

I would rule out the tranny, if it is working properly it should be putting pressure on the engine causing the stalling when you put it in Drive. Have you changed your fuel filter lately, O2 sensor?

Possibly the O2 sensor.

I replaced the fuel filter a month ago.
THanks!

Your problem sounds fuel system related. I would guess that you need to replace your fuel pump. The engine isn't misfiring so most likely the engine is being starved of fuel. Like most things the pump will work sporatically and eventually your car won't start at all. I am basing this on A VW with the same symptoms.
