Missing the sport in "4-dr Sports Car"
Missing the sport in "4-dr Sports Car"
My max (92 SE auto) is really slow off the line..doesn't start to feel like a V-6 until 3500 rpms or so, really disappointing. It also sucks in overdrive: the transmission is constantly shifting to keep up with speed changes, even slight ones. Anybody else encounter these probs? Let me know if you have an idea about what might be wrong.
My car had the same problems. A tune-up (fuel, air filter and plugs) helped but getting a Cold Air Intake and a new Y-pipe made an enormous difference in my eyes. As far as shifting goes, you just have to learn how much gas to apply to prevent massive amounts of shifting in certain situations. Hope that helps.
Heh, yeah, face it:
VE auto = no ***** off the line, it's pretty much a fact you're gonna have to deal with
However, TC time for me is coming up soon, no more of that problem for meeee

Hey jrodder, do you turn off the O/D while driving in the city? Anything under ~45-50 MPH you should have the O/D off, that will prevent most of the gear hunting.
The VE engine is in it's element in the upper RPM range. Freeway speeds are fun, and moreso with a 5-speed.

2. See above
3. Buy a Protorque higher stall convertor and run 205-50-15 tires
4. Buy a JWT ECU
AFter these steps your max will pull alot quicker off the line. Besides real sports car's have manual trannys
.
Lordrandall, are you serious about the O/D off under about 50mph??! I was just curious because I always thought you should leave it on and only turn it off when you are cruising on the highway. Doesn't it put more strain on the tranny? Man, I guess I've had it backwards all this time! If it doesn't put a lot of strain on the tranny, I'm gonna have to have O/D off most of the time!
You want sport? get a 5 speed VE. That will show you sport. And your VE auto shouldnt be too slow. I know Mr.Nismo has a bone stock VE auto. And he is out there running with modded VQ 5 speeds.
i have to agree the car goes nowhere off the line (i have a 92 auto se), but once past 3k rpm its over! A little tidbit i find that helps a little for off the line punch (on autos) is while stopped, hold the brake good and hard with your left foot and press down slightly on the gas at the same time...rev to maybe about 1.5-2k. Then when green, release the brake and stay on the gas. This should help a little, and its alot better than a Neutral drop...it wont kill the tranny.

How to jump off the line
For best start off the line with auto maxima, power brake with left foot, rev up a little to 2000-3000 rpm have it it 1st gear not drive, have 0/D off and have power on. Should get a decent jump off the line a small squeal of the tires and the jump on whoever your racing. This is how I do it anyway works for me! Just shift it to 2nd then drive as you need to and your on your way.
I really hope you don't believe that!!!! trust me....I know from experience....DON'T DO THIS!!!!!

I agree! I did this about 2 times, and both on accident because my stupid friend was playing with me and slipped it in neutral (when I wasn't looking). Anyways, long story short, it killed my tranny. I know I was coming up on a tranny rebuild but that neutral drop sure speeded the process up!

Highway travel, have the O/D on, meaning the little light on your das is NOT lit.
City travel, have the O/D off, the light on your dash IS lit.
**Light conditions taken from 5th gen Max, sorry I don't own a 3rd gen Auto**
Thank all that is holy.
Thats exactly what I meant Lordrandall. I don't know if I said it backwards or anything. I was just kidding around saying I was going to leave O/D off while I was doing city driving (under about 55mph), just so it makes my car feel faster!
I mean, with O/D off, my car pulls a LOT harder and is noticeably faster. I don't know how normal that is for all VG's but it does seem a little faster with O/D off.

capiche!
for the best starts do a flash stall, its safe and effective!
this whole O/D thing...
Ive got sum Q's about this too...
First of all I never drive with that light on..never...is that bad?
The only time I ever use it is if I need a boost of power, and when I turn it on, it works, I get a little jump...so how is it really supposed to be...can I have the light off all the time? Im so confused!

Hey DA-MAX, You're going to have to explain what a flash stall is to those that don't have a clue what you're talking about. I know exactly what you mean
, but just in case someone else doesn't know!

Hmm... there's only so many ways of launching an auto car, I imagine this would be just the regular "mash the pedal" approach, but we'll see what he says...
(darn it! where's that article I had on TCs...

until then, check out my page

go to the how-to section
scroll all the way down to ECCS components link
choose VG30E components and it'll show you a pic with lots of good stuff for your engine bay
Well, sidestepping the clutch at high rpm with manual tranny for maximum acceleration is equally bad for clutch and drivetrain. Do it sparingly, though, that ought to be OK. So do occasional brake torquing automatic tranny. Car magazines use it to obtain maximum acceleration. Just remember each use will shorten the life of certain components on your car, and be prepared to pay for it! I guess in this case it's the same as using Nitrous, except with Nitrous the effect (both in acceleration and in wear!) is even greater.
