Basic Engine Question - 89 Maxima SE (pics)

Well, my mothers' beloved 89 Max finally did something it hasn't done it all its years; overheat. Upon pulling off the highway (Atlanta's 285, figures) she found a frozen pipe, and one cracked pipe. We're in the process of replacing the pipe that was cracked (Radiator -> Engine) and very curious about the frozen bits. I know after seeing the mileage, everyone will want me to replace her car, but she's refused everything i've tried to get her. So the car stays : )

anyway, pics below, any advice on possible problems? comments at all? All appreciated and welcomed : )

Just under 400,000 miles, replaced transmission at 290,000, keep it extremely well maintained.

The hose that is being replaced as we speak (not pictured, but if you know about engines, i'm sure you'll notice the two bare valves.

The frozen bit was the aluminum piece immediately to the left of the oil dipstick. According to mom, it was pretty well coated, and solid ice at that.

so, advice? ideas? possible fixes?

Re: Basic Engine Question - 89 Maxima SE (pics)

The reason the car overheated was because the radiator hose cracked and all the coolant leaked out. The frozen aluminum pipe next to the dipstick is part of the A/C system. The refrigerant in the pipe from the compressor gets so cold that water vapor condenses on the pipe and freezes. This only happen when the A/C is running or for this time of year the defroster. It's nothing to worry about.

Yeah, the frozen pipe is normal and the overheating is because of the cracked hose. (Exactly like GreenMaxVE said)

That is some Maxima. Well its like 13 years... lemme fo the math.. Ok lets see... if this guys mother's macima is driven 2,540 miles a month times 12 months in a year times 13 years wpu;d equal 396,240
2540*12*13=396,240

so i figure about 30,500 per year driving. Thas alot...no wonder she loves it... A car that can get you to places with no problem and lolfast...And well maintained this car can see 1,000,000 miles in the next 13 years if your mom decides to keep her Maxima. This is a true mark of a well made mid-size sedan that we all love and know.

The numbers don't have to line up and often don't.

As for your Max, what major service has been done on your engine or transmission? Surely the tranny has been rebuilt???

And most importantly... CONGRATULATIONS on that mileage! I don't feel like mine is so old now with 184K! Wow - VG power!

Almost 400,000 miles!!! That's the highest I've ever seen or heard of and you have proof. Is your family the original owner? I agree with everyone else, the hose broke and spilled antifreeze onto the A/C lines freezing them. No major problem. Have you done any major things to the engine, and who rebuilt your tranny?

VG Power! Now thats what Im talking about. That is some true reliability right there. That is amazing, and you should definitly keep the car, if there are no other major problems with it. I replaced my radiator hose this weekend because mine cracked also...I guess it happens often. Dont worry, itz all good. We should celebrate when it hits 400k!
