Obd1 to Obd2 adapter cable
So i bought one off ebay and it cant scan. Keeps saying communication error. I have tried my launch easydiag scan tool through my iphone and my Matco scan tool and nothing. Has anyone encountered this?

On the 3rd gens, you need a Nissan ECCS Checker box (or you could theoretically make your own) to run for codes and whatnot, otherwise you need to check at the ECU using the switches. OBD systems will not work with our cars.
Edit: I lied, I think your 93 should actually be able to use the OBD1 stuff, but don't quote me on that.

im pretty sure you need a special scanner for OBDI though, ive scanned some late 80s early 90s cars at work that im pretty sure were OBDI and had a diagnosis connector port. we dont use the regular OBDII scanners on them, its some old gameboy looking scanner and you just get a code like 59 CRANK POSITION SENSOR
im pretty sure on all 3rd gens all you can do is count the ECU flashes, at least for all GXE and pre 92 SE. 92-94 SE i think are the same way

OBD I and OBD II are not compatible, otherwise you could buy a scanner that would do both. While an adapter cable could let you connect an OBD II scanner to an OBD I car, the protocols are totally different. It's my understanding that OBD II was pretty much designed from scratch after it was decided that the OBD I design couldn't be upgraded.

From my understanding it should work regardless but i guess it was a waste of money. I thought Nissan would have an adapter for this kind of **** at the dealer for diag. that way the tech. does not waste time counting the flashes off the ECU. What a waste!

I believe they do or atleast did which was a consult. Have you checked with a dealership to ask them?

They do - its a Nissan ECCS checker box. All it does is beep, flash the red and green lights and have toggle switches to change the modes in lieu of using the switches on the ECU. Allows you to monitor the flashes and change modes while driving/watching gauges instead of flailing around on the floor. I'll take a picture of it on Monday, its a super basic little box, but they aren't made anymore, AFAIK and only dealers can get them. I believe they made the transition to OBDI somewhere in 92-94 but I could be wrong there, cars prior to OBD-I (such as the early to mid 3rd gens) use ECCS, rather than OBD-I, based on my experiences with trying to use our older equipment on my own 3rd gen. Our oldest OBD-I CONSULT system does not interface with these ECCS based diagnostic systems.

ive done that shiz at work on old vehicles. welcome to 80s/early 90s technology, enjoy your stay
hell 70s EFI is worse, usually no flashes to count off the ECU or anything to at least help you diagnose

Hello guys
This is my first post in this forum, and I apologize you for my poor english.
Thank god, today exists the "google translator".![Big Grin](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I do not find a section to do my oficial presentation. Exists?
Well, I introduce myself now.
I have two cars a Nissan Maxima 93 with VG30E engine and automatic transmission and a Ford Falcon 83, and I love them both. The Ford was rebuilt with some parts of a maxima 92.
Regarding this post, I was looking to communicate a PC with the ECCS nissan , and found this, it might be useful for everyone.
I have not tried it yet, due to time, but I'll try to prove

I use a OBDI scanner cable I purchased some years ago from ECUTalk for my 91 G50-VH45DE. Basically I had it running some free download version of Consult and software where I could run a "Power Balance" test. I think ECUTalk had some Infiniti Active Suspension diagnostics that may have been only available from Consult. The software worked and I used the Power Balance test to confirm I had two bad injectors. I later got a handheld version of ECUTalk that allows ECU (read tuner) settings to be changed for the track.
I would check out www.ecutalk.com The guy who develops ECUTalk was approachable and great about answering questions via email. The software is developed in Australia so I have to remember the timing offset difference between AU and US vehicles.
SIDE NOTE: I just bought a Consult III scanner tool and software to reset my 99 model NATS -- should I need it. I'll be testing it on my 99 I30 and Maxima in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.
