found transmission leak help

i found a leak at the output shaft seal. smh
i notice that the gears were hard to go in so i check the oil level and it was low. so i added more tranny oil but now my 5th gear wont work at all and 3rd gear goes in rough. did i wait to long to add more oil? planning to replace the seal tommorrow and drain all the oil and add new oil again. is there anything i can do to help with the 5th gear issue and 3rd gear?

did it grind or act notchy when you drove it low on oil? if not i dont think that would be enough to cause damage so quickly

if you're going to drop the trans to swap the seal might as well drop if off to a rebuilder since it's sounding like you have problems with it internally.

You don't have to drop the transmission to replace the seal. Driver side seal

then it would help if you can actually name the correct part.

axle seal - driver side.

I plan to do that. Time to go window shopping for the best price. But I'll drop the transmission myself to save labor cost. Hopefully I save alot

WAIT WAIT WAIT! is it the dang axle seal or the trans output shaft seal(this seal has the shaft that enters into the torque converter or clutch works)

dang, be clear :P

if it's the axle seal, why would folks still say be needs a trans rebuilt??... no it doesn't. it's cake to replace the driver side axle seal!! You also say you hear grinding on the driver side... u have a bad axle CV joint.

replace the driver axle & seal! done

final verdict...
- Yes it's axle seal
- No trans does not require a rebuild to change it
