Howdy all.

My Max is making an odd noise at around 2000-2400 RPM's. The noise basically sounds like something metal is rattling around in the engine bay on the passenger side. It only happens at the above RPM's and is very noticable.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Jeff

I'm having that same noise when I accelerate, it kind of sounds like i'm dragging a soda can and I can't figure out what it is.

Do I have to drive your car again? I got the SMC shifter on but it was a *****. Maybe yours will be easier. I'll take a look at it sometime. I have no idea what your noise is. Rev the engine w/ the hood up and take a look in there.

VTC's

On 92-94 SE's the engine (VE30DE) has a device called
a VTC which moves the camshaft after time the internal
spring loses tension and begins to make noise (clacker
clacker is what I always say at the shop) you can either
get new VTC's ($$$) or rebuild the old ones. Labor will
be expensive because it requires taking apart the front
upper part of the engine. Jeff92se has a piture of said
device.

Re: VTC's

I don't think its the VTC's, its not really a ticking like the VTC failure and it was pretty sudden... the vtc just starts quiet and then get louder and louder, it also doesn't rattle all the time like the vtc. It only makes the noise from about 2000-2400 rpms.

I don't know....

uhhhh, if anyone on this board were to know that, it would be JLT1 and Jeff...
what he's talking about definitely isn't VTC tick anyway..

Have the same noise on the 94.....I can only hear it at low speeds

and within that same RPM range.

My guesses:

(a) Exhaust Manifold Studs - $$$

(b) Worn out engine mount(s) causing heat shield to rub against exhaust.

(c) Just heat shield rubbing against something.

Unfortunately, my guess is (a)

does it sound like a piece of loose sheetmetal or something?

what gears does this happen in? all gears at that RPM, or just a certain one?

I'm wondering if it could be a heat shield or something rattling because of wind/engine rpm.. ???

how about CV boots/joints? I seriously doubt that's it, but who knows.. no vibrations or anything?

I had the noise in first gear only and I had cv joint problems a while ago 1 went out and a week after i got it fixed the other went (lucky me)and after that I still heard the noise but then after a while it just stopped. The only time I heard it was when I was coming off a dead stop.
