cv dust boots service?

Hi Guys

Took the car in to have torn cv boot replaced. When talking to service i told them i told them to replace both inner and outer boots when they pull the axle. Just makes since to me to change both 30 year old boots though the outer was not yet torn.

So when i picked up the car...was told the tech only changed the inner boot. This does not make for a happy camper! 300 dollars labor to change one boot when they could have changed both inner and outer at the same time same cost?

And i specifically talked (by phone) to the service writer 'change both inner and outer boot on the axle in question.

Last time i had the service change the (other side) torn boot in 2015...the that tech did the job correctly ...changed the inner and outer cv dust boots and the axle seal to the transmission.

I see it as a communication problem...you have to talk to the tech through a service writer...and today service writer was on his day off so the mechanic just assumed that only the inner boot (torned) was to be changed.

Isn't it a common practice to change both boots on the axle along with seal
replacement to transmission on a 30 year old car?...rather than just one boot?

Thanks in advance

It really depends on who is doing it.

For one thing, the technician will only do what is written on the work order. Especially if it is a dealership. So when you talked to the service writer via telephone, you really have no idea what he wrote on the work order. I'm betting he only wrote the inner boot down.

I personally will replace the oil seal, while there are a lot of guys here on the org that will not if the seal is not leaking.

The labor charge of $300 make me glad that I do my own.

For that Labour cost you probably could have just replaced the cv axles. If they're already clicking when turning the corners it's too late to save them with a boot kit anyway.
