AC gets warm on highest setting

AC gets warm on highest setting
In my '90 SE, the AC is quite cold on the lowest three of the four settings (1, 2, and 3). But if I set it on "4", it gradually blows less and less cold until eventually it's blowing warm.
If I then set it back down to "3", it quickly gets cold again.
Any suggestions?
