Muffler Recommendations (HKS??)
Muffler Recommendations (HKS??)
I did a search and did not come up with much...
I would like to know if anyone has an HKS muffler and if they like it. I am leaning towards it because I like the sound better than Greddy. I know there will be some droning from it. I am getting custom exhaust piping installed as well. I was quoted a price of $500-$600 installed.
Any thoughts??

...from HKS, the value of the muffler is $275...
...is the general feeling that I should still look somewhere else?
Re: Re: Re: Muffler Recommendations (HKS??)
DAMN.....$275.....will this muffler cook breakfast for you too??
what kinda of HKS is it?? you might be able to find a similar style "generic-brand" muffler for a lot less!

Those catbacks are way too damn expensive IMO! I mean, I still don't understand how it can cost $500-$600 for a muffler with some piping. That is all they are, right? I'm just getting a Dynomax Race Magnum off Jegs.com for $60. Oh yeah, and the Dynomax gives the Maxima a deep, throaty v8 growl. I think $60 + v8 throaty growl is a whole lot better than wasting $500+ for HKS or Greddy. BTW, who has experience with the Greddy? I remember hearing some people say it makes the Max sound ricey. It seems that most Japanese mufflers (Tanabe, TenzoR, Greddy, HKS), or mufflers made by companies that have a aftermarket Honda following, seem to have a very ricey sound to them. $60-$100 for a Dynomax Race Magnum or Borla Turbo muffler sounds like a much better deal for the money + it makes the Max sound like a BMW m3, Porsche 911 or v8!

Dunno how hard core u are w/looks...kinda rice, kinda not. but your choice: spend more for generic that sounds and performs bad but looks good; or spend less for something that sounds great and sucks your exhaust fumes from your engine, giving u that extra hp instead of taking it away.

IMHO there is no difference between the "V8" sound and the "rice" sound.
They both sound horrible.
BTW: greddy=quality= QUIET...no rice.

the $60 muffler gurgles more and is louder...hence, the noticable "v8" sound.
Someone verify this: Greddy uses 2.5" mandrel bent tubing. You can save some $ by examining your current tubing and buying the needed bends online. Then bring the bends and muffler to a shop and have them weld it all together for you.
Here's an excellent article to get you started

and I hope every one reads that article.. about back pressure.. i hate having to keep quoting from that article.. and repeating my self, about the theory of back pressure.. im just plain sick of it..
every one keeps saying you need back pressure.. blah blah blah.. it isnt true, you want no backpressure + higher velocity

All I can say is The greddy SP does NOT make a rice sound at ANY rpm range on the VE.
hmm...could be cuz you're moving forward and the CAI is in front of you so you hear it a lot...while the greddy is behind u and you're driving away from it's noise pollution. Have you been in another car and followed someone driving your Max?
I've never heard a VE with Greddy. However, I've heard VQ's with them when standing on the sidewalk and they're cruising by. The sound is distinct even when cruising. It's noticable from 50-30ft away (cruising rpm, 15-20mph), which's much better than ricer 100ft away.
And just for the heck of it, I've heard 2 1st gen Altimas w/greddy...and they're louder than the VQ's. The gurgling is more noticeable. VQ's get the advantage that the gurgling is slower and deeper toned.

All I know is that I am getting the WW kit. Because of that I am going dual Dynomax's or maybe Borla Turbos (Dynomax seems a better deal) w/ dual tips on each. I think that will look much better and evenly proportional instead of just one big tip (like Greddy). I should get .wavs for you guys to hear my GXE. I'll try to do that today or tomorrow. My cat is pretty much dead (clogged up) and my stock muffler is damaged but, for some reason, my GXE has this really mean sound. Being a Porsche enthusiast, I can accurately say my Maxima sounds very similar to a 70's-80's Porsche 911 (930 or 964). My jaw dropped to the ground last week when I had my friend floor my GXE up and down my street. Its the first time I ever heard my Maxima driven by someone else. I've had it for about 3-4yrs and never even knew it sounded that awesome!
My buddy in my car club bought a HKS Catback exaust for his 2001 Integra GSR. He paid $750 !!! His car sounds BAD A$$. If what you are getting is basicly HKS catback system (the pipe is mendrel bent) for 500 to 600 dollars, Id say go for it, cant beat the HKS sound. As for me? Ill enjoy my Borla Boomer!
Personally I don't like the look of just one big muffler. Even if it isn't a huge muffler, I still think that duals looks better. Just think about it though. For the price of the Greddy catback ($400-$600) you could get 2 Dynomax Race Magnums ($120), mandrel-bent tubing(not sure how much), and a y-splitter and make kind of a half dual exhaust (dual after the cat). Total price of that + the welding would definitely be under $500 and probably more around $300-$400 at most. And wouldn't your Maxima's be so much happier?

Dude, I don't post for a lil' bit and all hell breaks lose
The Greddy sounds Ricey? WTF???? Dude... I about creamed myself when I heard mine driven by JonnyMax... It sounds GREAT!!! Nice and Low, not too much noise, and I have done some modification to mine... I ripped out the huge and obtrusive resonator that lives right behind the cat.
Personally, I love my Greddy, Yeah, I hear the CAI more, but that is natural, the Greddy SP is for Street Performance, it'll a few horses, make a nice low sound and will add some looks, plus, I love stayin' JDM with a car that doesn't have much JDM stuff for it.
I also have the WS y, and catco hi flow, so my sound is roughly as loud as it can get with the Greddy, and ask NGthing, he wants mine cause of how quiet and Unricey it sounds...
I respect those that create there own exhaust, like JonnyMax, but... I only paid $375 for my SP... I just got lucky, it was new inbox...
Oh, and to those that pay for installation of exhaust.
GET DIRTY, it's hella easy.

God#$#$@ Son of a b#$%@# rat bas#$@!!!!!!!!!!!! I just wrote nearly a page response and the stupid d-board decided to fill up!
Long story short, I didn't mean to offend anyone by saying the Greddy is ricey. Does anyone know if Apexi makes a catback for 3rd gens? I think I might have been confusing the ricey sound of the Apexi for Greddy. It is all because of this SE I saw 1yr ago and it sounded ricey as hell. I always assumed it was the Greddy but it seems more like it was Apexi. Does anyone have any sounds of the Greddy because I'd really like to hear it if it sounds that good.
Thanks for the encouragement Bman!
Actually, I have all those pics of Flyrys dual conversion. I read his post thoroughly but, I still need to work everything out and make sure mine will fit with dual Dynomax's. I think I smell some rigging coming though!

apexi = huge tip, large canister
greddy = large canister, not as ricey looking tip
It's not so easy to tell the diff till u get close and examine the canister and tips. I personally like how the greddy tip looks.

*You pay for what you get*
So what have you decided to go with?
I gotta defend my obx...
OBX a ricer?...not exactly
Dynomaxs are long?...UP TO 11 inches?
My obx is 14 inches (24 inches from tip to tip)...and of course its perforated
All obx are 304 stainless...only some of dynomax are stainless...you dont have to have tips welded on with obx...no welds on core at all...
and it sounds mean

Dunno how hard core u are w/looks...kinda rice, kinda not. but your choice: spend more for generic that sounds and performs bad but looks good; or spend less for something that sounds great and sucks your exhaust fumes from your engine, giving u that extra hp instead of taking it away.

Thanks for all of the feedback, it was very interesting and helpful.
anything would sound better on a V6
Im not trying to bash anyone or their exhaust unlike others in this thread...it just seems like you should know what you're talking about before you do go bashing...
