replace boot or axle?
replace boot or axle?
Replaced my tires a few weeks ago boots good , replaced brakes a few days ago and left cv boot ripped . No noise while turning . My 92 gxe has 60k true mileage. As a great deal of the price of this job is labor I would like to konw of anyones experience with just replacing the boot as oppossed to the axle. Do these joints last forever while lubricated? Drove an audi coupe for a couple of years with a clicking joint while turning, finally repaced that when it started clicking while going straight . Prefer not to hear clicking noises so tell me boot or axle? I will not do this job myself. Thanks for your imput.

Here's how I see it. It's $16 for a boot and 2hr of work that anybody can do. Only special tool you'll need is a huge socket that will fit the nut that holds the brake/rotor setup.
Or you could have someone replace the outter boot for $80+. If you're gonna do that, mind as well pay $150+ to get the axle replaced. Around here, an axle will run roughly $100.
Personally, I think that if it's not clicking or making noises, just do the boot yourself. It's not hard. Even if it fails later, it's not like you can't drive on a clicking joint. If it is clicking, replace the axle. Only take it to a shop if you don't know what you're doing (remember, no special tools required, and it's straightforward).
Also, try having an install meet w/other Nissan people. Sentras, Altimas, and Maximas are generally the same.

I did the job myself, so I just changed the boot. It actually was a pain in the butt job, so if you got the $$ let the shop deal with it.
If I was having someone else do it I would pony up the extra 100 for new halfshaft.
