replace boot or axle?

Replaced my tires a few weeks ago boots good , replaced brakes a few days ago and left cv boot ripped . No noise while turning . My 92 gxe has 60k true mileage. As a great deal of the price of this job is labor I would like to konw of anyones experience with just replacing the boot as oppossed to the axle. Do these joints last forever while lubricated? Drove an audi coupe for a couple of years with a clicking joint while turning, finally repaced that when it started clicking while going straight . Prefer not to hear clicking noises so tell me boot or axle? I will not do this job myself. Thanks for your imput.

depends on the price of a axle...if it's under 100 you're better off getting a new axle. doing the boot is a huge pain in the rear. very messy and you have to make sure everything is perfectly clean. boots and etc from the dealer is about 40-50 bucks for the one axle.

i replaced my axles recently...mechanic told me that if u drive for 8 hrs on a broken boot then u might as well replace the axle...prob depends on the weather in your area 2, u just dont want grime and water getting in there...i say it depends on whether u r doing the job yourself or letting a mechanic do it...the difference in price by a mechanic is so small u might as well replace the whole axle...for me it was gonna be about 100 for a boot or 160 for an axle (keep in mind thats just one side) im not sure what it cost to replace the boot yourself, but im sure it pretty cheap...just be sure to buy a boot that involves taking off the axle, i tried one that wraps around the axle w/o taking it off and well, it fell off...if it was me (and it was at one time) just replace the axle...its a little more money, but a lot less hassle

Here's how I see it. It's $16 for a boot and 2hr of work that anybody can do. Only special tool you'll need is a huge socket that will fit the nut that holds the brake/rotor setup.

Or you could have someone replace the outter boot for $80+. If you're gonna do that, mind as well pay $150+ to get the axle replaced. Around here, an axle will run roughly $100.

Personally, I think that if it's not clicking or making noises, just do the boot yourself. It's not hard. Even if it fails later, it's not like you can't drive on a clicking joint. If it is clicking, replace the axle. Only take it to a shop if you don't know what you're doing (remember, no special tools required, and it's straightforward).

Also, try having an install meet w/other Nissan people. Sentras, Altimas, and Maximas are generally the same.

I did the job myself, so I just changed the boot. It actually was a pain in the butt job, so if you got the $$ let the shop deal with it.

If I was having someone else do it I would pony up the extra 100 for new halfshaft.

i had one boot replaced at a shop and it cost me $140 with labor included. definitely replace the axle if it seems cost effective to do so.
