Major brake problem

Ok, i have a 1990 Maxima SE with ABS. (4 disc brake abs etc. etc...) Well, when i press the brakes there is this funny noise in the front right like a springy type sound. It is the abs kicking in too soon. I took it to meineke and they can't figure out what is wrong. I also am getting air in the lines somehow but there are no leaks anywhere. Has anyone had this problem or know a fix? Thanks.

You need to take it to a competent brake shop, NOT a freako place like Mineke. either the dealer, or a good brake shop that deals with ABS and understands the computers and pumps and other such nifty items.

unless you're very well versed in brakes, this isn't a DIY fix. pay the money and lat someone with proper skills look at it. we'll all be safer in the long run.

Hmm.. that's kind of what i wanted to avoid. How much would the abs system cost at the dealer if that's the problem?

why don't you give your local dealer a call and find out. prices change so much throughout the country that I couldn't give you an accurate answer based on oklahoma prices. (they're 1/2 what NYC prices are).

car-part.com is a good place for used parts. I would suspect your ABS pump is failing. it's the big metal box in the front right corner of the car. fairly common item to fail after several years.

Well i just got back from dropping my car off at the dealer. right away they thought it was the master cylinder. although they're going to charge like anywhere from 300 to 500 or soemthing like that. so i'm just going to get the part and take it to meineke cause they'll do it for 200 and i trust the guy that works there.

if it's just the master cylinder, then you got lucky.. that could very well be the problem though..

however, would a master cylinder problem be making the abs kick in early. that's the only thing keeping me from thinking it's the master cylinder.

if the master cylinder is letting air into the system, then it can do all kinds of weird stuff to the ABS system.
that's cheap enough to replace over changing out the ABS pump ($800+), so do that first and see what happens.
