Crankshaft pulley help

I'm changing my timing belt/water pump/drive belts and I need to know how to remove the crankshaft pulley. Specifically, I need to know the thread of the crank-pulley bolt (loosen clockwise or counter-clockwise?). Also, has anyone tried to "Starter Blip" method where to rest a breaker bar against the frame or ground and blip the starter to break the crank-pulley loose?
Thanks
-Justin

Glad I have a 5spd

Hmmm...I thought you were in the "No Manual Tranny = No Care" club...Manuals don't have that issue. But you may need a gear puller to get it off, even after you remove the bolt.

DO NOT do the starter blip thing. that's basically tying a bar to the end of your engine and letting it loose to beat on rest of your car. dumb move... it might work, but there's a good chance you'll ruin the head of the bolt or snap the bar or it'll turn the other way and whck you car with the wrench.

If you don't have air tools at home, I would suggest taking it to a tire place.. have them use an impact wrench to break it loose, then tighten it by hand.. drive the car home and finish the job.

on my SE, the pulley slid right off with no efort.. on my GXE, I had to use a puller.

Do not do the "...blip" thing. I've seen a guy try that and broke the head of the bolt off and sent the breaker bar throug the radiator and condenser. He also broke the screw extractor in the end of the crank trying to get it out, so by the time we got it, we had to pull the motor out and send the crank off to the machine shop to have it redrilled and tapped. Don't do it; it was a very expensive lesson in using the proper tools. Have someone impact it off. Also my balancer had to be pulled off with a puller. But I've worked on other Nissans whose balancers just slid off too. Good luck.

Well if you have a 5 spd, then all you have to do is have someone get in the car, put it in 5th gear, and hold the brake down while you brake it loose. That's what I did when I did my UDP.

Is it standard thread though? Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey? I have access to air-tools.

Thanks for the help guys. I got it all changed and everything runs. Only real problem I have now is locating some new water-pump pulley bolts(4), and new screws for the under-engine pulleys (16). I broke one of the water-pump pulley bolts and couldn't find a replacement at the local hardware store, NAPA or Autozone. I snapped about 5 of the under-engine cover screws due to rust and 6 more looked like they were about to go too. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'm thinking of emailing Courtesy.

most hardware stores should carry metric bolts.. if not, then most auto parts stores do.. if it's a little long, run a nut that fits down onto the bolt, get out the hacksaw and trim it to the right length. then back the nut off the bolt and it'll clean the threads and it'll screw right in.

you should be able to find them in grade 5 and 8.. grade 5 will be sufficient for that kind of stuff.

If you have a Lowe's Hardware nearby, they carry metric fasteners, even in stainless. That's what I bought for the under-engine covers.
They also have some in Din 12.9 (metric equiv of grade 8).
