Re: engine Valves

You probably have one or more broken exhaust studs. These studs hold the exhaust manifold onto the cylinder head. You have a V-6, so there are two heads, and likewise two manifolds. There are 6 studs on each manifold. Nissans V-6's from this era have a known problem of weak exhaust studs. Take the car ro any shop and have them check it out, then ask for an estimate. You don't need to get this problem fixed right away, but the sooner the better. If a stud broke off, it probably needs to be drilled out of the head which is a very tedious operation.

I would say it's a sticky hydraulic lifter. Vgs are known to to that.

mine does it. at first i thought it was a cracked exaust manifold, but then i figured it was the lifters. it is annoying as hell.

If I were you I would try running a motor flush. Just make sure you follow the instructions on the can exactly (STP is good).
This is inexpensive and worth trying.

I've looked in the service manuel a while back and your right I dont think we can adjust our lifters (at least for the ve), they are hydraulic. My friend has a honda and they are supposed to get there hydraulic lash adjusters adjusted every so often, but I dont know anything about there motor.

hey catman, you should really check the exhaust manifold. i had the exact same problem, that clicking noise when you accelerate. i got the manifold and the studs replaced, and now my car runs quiet as if it was new. major difference. im telling you, check the studs, man.

A stuck lifter will make noise all of the time, not just during acceleration. Ususally the lifters pump up a few seconds after starting the engine, and will quit making noise. A broken exhaust stud will make most noise during acceleration.

That would make noise at idle too, right? When it's cold and my oil is low or it is just really, really cold and I first start it up it makes a noise like the one you are describing. If it were the lifters it would always make that noise and not stop, jsut get worse, right??

i got a used manifold for $100, and the studs were really cheap. like $6. but the labor was costly.

studs

Sweet, I was hoping it was not my valves that was making that sound, It only does it under accecleation so hopefully it is the manifolds. Now I just have to see if I have the skills to take the job on my self. Maybe it is time for a whole new exhaust system. God this might cost a bundle in the end.

how does it sound like??? My max is pretty loud too now but it doesnt make that tick tick noise u guys are talking about. When i lift the hood up....its even louder. To my it sounds like its coming form the exhaus manifold. It could be that the studs are broken...any suggestions. And it makes my tenzo muffler sounds like a damn helicopter or a freakin glass pak.
