Cam seal & shifter bushing replacement

man i just took my car in for the U12 recall, and they told me my cam seal is gushing oil everywhere, and my shifter bushing is all the way gone. He told me the shifter bushing isnt that big of a deal, but the cam seal can leak onto the timing belt i just replaced. man this sucks!

i just spent 1400.00 on the car now they want:
cam seal replacement: 590.00
bushing:75.00
I bet i can do these myself or with my mechanic friends help for not even 100.00. i will see. wish me luck and give me any feedback on the process of this. should i also do the rear main seal?

Dude what shifter bushing are you talking about. They might be jerking you on that one b/c if its just the nylon bushing (white) that goes where the shift cable meets the tranny, it only cost a buck. They parts guy at my local nissan shop gave me one for free.

that shifter bushing goes. it sucks. is your shifter hard to get it to go in to drive? thats what happened to mine. oh well. good luck. its not to hard to throw in that bushing..

here are a couple of ideas.. do a search on shifter bushing..
i am sure someone on this forum has performed that task.
btw if the bushing was worn to the point it needed replacing. you would be complaining about hard shifting..

what the fluck are u talking about?
hard shifting? the shifter bushing has NOTHING to do w/ the shift quality of the tranny. it's a bushing at the pivot point of the tranny shifter and the tranny shifter cable. if it's worn the shifter would be loose..sometimes difficult to engage it into D or R..but that's about it. the car will still shift and drive normal.

1) Who did the timing belt change? They should ALWAYS check the seals because if they show signs of need replacement they should be swapped to save labor costs. They're already in there so it just makes sense to do them if needed...

2) Shifter bushing is an easy task and will only cost a couple bucks for the part. Replace this because essentially what can happen is you could be driving and nip your shifter and throw it into neutral or other things. That wouldn't be good. The way to tell if your bushing is on its way out is that you would have to jiggle the shifter to engage drive and park....

hmmmmmm

well the problem i am having is that sometimes like you guys said i have to pull it a little further down to make it engage into drive, or even reverse. all other gears work fine. And alot of tiems i have to use the emergency release when backing out or going into drive just to engage the car, but its no biggie to me. he told me it doesnt hurt anything as long as i am not abusing it, its an auto how can i lol. i have been trying to find out who did the timing belt change and ask them why they didnt do it. i will keep you posted.

lets get this str8

if you have to slightly pull your shifter down a lil farther for it to engage into park, the bushing needs to be changed? I always wondered what was making my car do that and supposidly when i first got my Max, I had a rebuilt tranny put in free of charge...should the guy who did that have changed that bushing also?

anyone have or know where a write up is on how to change these bushings...did the search and all i found was that you have to remove the heat sheild by the cat-back and pull some pin out.
