You can dremmel out the bose pods to 5.25
I am currently in the process of replacing my Bose grills with a piece of reinforced hardboard that will be flush with the rest of the door panel with 6.5s top mounted. to the panel

I have 6.75"s at all four corners The install really isn't any harder than 6.5"s, but since I needed 6.75"s for the back I figured why not get them for the front too. Another guy on here has 6x9"s in the front but he said it involved entirely too much work and wasn't worth the hassle. In my opinion just get something bigger than 5.25"s and you'll be happy. Watch out for the depth of the speaker also. Take your door off and take some measurements and you'll see what fits and what doesn't.

I made some crappy little plywood enclosures really easily for some pioneer 4x6s
pics on my webpage in the how-to section
http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte671n/mymax.html

also have pics on there of some really nice homemade ones from John Van de Pol (John VdP or something like that on here). He did a really nice job with plywood

I dont have any measurements, but you can just measure the stock pods and figure it out

and now I put the BOSE back in if I want to sell the car

Way to go Craig i have a similar setup. Your wood brackets actually gave me the idea. I made custom 3D wood housings to fit my 6.5s in front almost exactly like the bose housings, matched the angle of which the speaker fires kinda slightly diagonally up into the inside. And the 6x9s in back - easy like carvel ice cream cake. A friend of mine threw 6x9s in the front doors of his 91 but he has them sticking out without the cover etc, mines all nice and cozy behind the grill. And yes i also plan to put back in the bose when the car sells

YESSSSSSS! get pioneers with the 1" tweeters and i suggest putting them in the A pill's, sound is A-freaking-MAZING i feel like im in a concert hall, components really help the sound "spread out" over the front

i put some polk 5x7 in the front. first, i did a real hack job and just dremeled out the factory pods. the sound was pretty bad like this. i started building some nice pods out of mdf. they are a hassle to make and are time consuming. they fit nicely behind the door panel and i made them so the speaker is angle more toward your ears. the pods are completely sealed.

how did you install the tweeters? i was thinking either the A-pillar or somewhere on the door panel, most likely in the corner near the A-pillar.

well the component set i got had 2 different types of tweeter housings, one to make it flush with the mounting surface and the other which it sticks out - thats what i used and they fire at an angle...i dont have a direct pic of it but the closest thing i have:
