a few questions...

I have a 1990 Maxima with 238k on it with the usual oil changes, timing belts, etc... after all this time it is for the most part running smoothly. For quite awhile now it has a rough idle with does not seem to go away. Is there any way of fixing this? I need to replace the air filter in the car and was wondering if a K & N filter would be good for the car or just go with a plain old filter? From some of the posts it seems that it would not be. Some times when I get out of the car it smells if there is burning rubber. We may think it is a gasket leak.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Nathan

The K&N is fine to use, I have it because it came with the car. If you don't mind the wash/re-oil ritual once in a while it can't hurt, but it won't make any noticable dent in performance or filter better. I wouldn't have bothered getting it if I had a say.

Rough idle could be many things, but think about the parts that haven't been changed/cleaned/whathaveyou lately: fuel, spark, air, sensors (a new category for the times). If the problem is only at idle (and isn't horrible) try throwing in a bottle of Techron and taking it for a hard drive or good highway run to clean the injectors.
