HELP HELP HELP Someone please read
Alright heres my situation. About 2 weeks ago I was going to visit one of my friends at school. When I tried to accelerate from a stop after going through one of the tollbooths on the highway, my car would just rev in first all the way up to like, 6-6500 rpms before it would kick over to second (its an automatic btw). My other shifts rev-ed unusually high as well, and I had to drive it like this for about 10 miles, until i parked it and turned it off about 20 mins after, and it worked fine the following time i drove it.
today i went to the bank on my lunch break from work and when i went back out to my car it did it again, only this time wouldnt ever get out of first gear (luckily the bank wasnt far from my work; couldn't be too good for the car to drive it like that)
my question is simply what the hell is wrong w my car, its a 92 gxe w/ at least 157k (my odometer broke about a month ago). one of my friends said his best guess would be the transmission fluid, but i really don't know. if this isnt even enough information for anyone to wager a guess at what my problem may be, than i'm sorry, but its all i can tell you. while i like doing stuff to my car, ill be the first to tell you that i don't know all that much about the inner workings of a car engine. please give me any info possible. thanks

had something simliar to this happen...
and it turned out to be a blown auto tranny
Like he said, check your fluid - if its not purple/redish then
somethings is getting trashed in there.
Also, my car did this where it would get stuck in a gear and not up shift AFTER getting my tranny rebuilt - it was my REVOLUTION sensor.
This went away after about a month or so of the rebuild - dont know why
Try the self diagnostic test on the tranny - im sure someone can post
the steps on how to do that

check the fluid, but if you really don't know then take it to a tranny shop someone local reccomends. they should give you a free estimate (most good places will).
whatever tehy tell you, have it confirmed by someone else (esp if it's an expensive fix which many tranny repairs/rebuilds are)

instructions to checking the fluid are in your owner's manual. please read it. If you don't have one, you can purchase one from a dealer. you can often find them at salvage yards for next to nothing.
for the immediate time being, start the car, put it in drive, then reverse, then back to part. let it sit about 15-30 seconds in each gear. leave the engine running and pull the dipstick out.. wipe off, insert, remove and read... same process as checking your oil, except you do it with the engine running after going through the gears.
for the problem, I would bet the problem at least started with low/bad fluid. if you don't even know how to check it, then I'm sure it hasn't been checked since you bought the car. not good.
fill the fluid to the correct level, and if it's still having problems, start saving your pennies because you're going to need a rebuild soon.

After you change your tranny fluid and if the problem still persists then it could be your shift linkage or inhibitor switch (selector switch). Just recently I had to adjust mine (something of a pain in the butt).
happened to me too
that happened to me one day goin up a hill off of a turn...the car revved to about 6500...then i let off the gas and it finally shifted out of first ...after i dropped my friend off at her house..i went to back out...no reverse...i ended up pushin my car out of the driveway...then i ended up payin $1800 to rebuild my tranny...nissan auto tranny = P.O.S. my advice is to listen to what these ppl say and check ur fluid..im pretty sure thats y my tranny went
