Alignment question (front end)

Alignment question (front end)
I'm actually writing for my high school aged son who has a '91 Maxima with 126,000 miles. He has had it aligned twice, but the inner edges of both tires still wear out. It looks like a camber problem to me. I checked the service manual and it says camber is pre-set at factory and replace worn parts if specs are not met. What is the most likely culprit here? Is this an indication that the struts are worn out? I do not have experience with these front wheel drives. Any advice by forum readers is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg

Hey Greg,
I had the same problem when I lowered my car. The exact same problem. Even though your son probably dosen't have his car lowered, it can be fixed in the same way....Your problem probably is camber, so ask your alignment specialist about special camber correction bolts, they are specially designed to fix the camber beyond the factory specs. You should be able to get them there at the shop, and will cost you (probably, depending on the shop) under $20 with the alignment. Also you can get them at
www.lightningmotorsports.com/ingalls.htm (front end correction $23)
Im not sure what the problem is with the camber, if nothing has been messed with in the suspension, but try this, it WILL work. Good Luck!

After several aligments (5-6), I got new OEM struts and this seemed
to help a little with the camber - it did bring it back into specs.
It has been fine since then...for the most part..
Other things you should check out:
toe in/out - is this in spec ? this can indirectly cause that wear
(as it did in my case)
bent suspension parts? strut housing? spindle? control arm?
bent rims ? this can also cause weird problems (personal experience)

could be bad wheel bearings, ball joints, struts, control arm bushings, lots of different things.
the alignment shop should have enough sense to figure things out, but many times they'll just align it and send it out the door unless you ask them to check other stuff.
a few questions for you/your son..
Has the car ever been wrecked?
is the car lowered by aftermarket springs- or even heating/cutting the stock springs (heaven forbid!)
how hard does he drive the car?
how long does it take to wear out the tires?
how many miles and what kinda of other maintenance has been done on the suspension components?

Also, does the car shake at a high speed-65 to 75 mph? Just because it was aligned does not mean that they aligned it correctly. Make sure they do a 4 wheel alignment. If other front end componnent are bad, the alignment is useless. U can take it to a shop and ask them to check the front suspension. some shop will not charge u anything.

I had no major accident at 40,000 miles but the inside edges wore out at 38K. New 90K Mich. tires and then an accident at 52K miles, taking out the wheel and power steering rack (one new Mich tire now). Tire alignment, rack, wheel and tire, but then auto tranny when out. Only 40K on the 90K Mich, three tires its down on the inside edge again. The newer tire has 1/4 inch of tread all the way across.
Has always been stable at high speeds <90 mph.
What gives?
On the Road.
