door trim repainting

hey guys
just wondering what you guys think would be best to repaint some of my door trim
i searched around a bit and found that most people want to remove it and have the chrome thats underneath it show
but i think chrome is repulsive
well anyway, there are spots where its just shiny as **** and it looks like hell
other spots are just rusty
i was just thinkin about sanding it down and repainting it
but would paint stick well?
and it would probably be best to repaint the entire trim right?
not just the effected areas

thanks for any help

If you can remove the trim, do that. Sand it down as much as possible, starting with a heavy grit and progressing to finer and finer grits. Then, spray it with some primer. Sand some more with a fine grit, then coat it again with primer. Smooth it out with a final run of fine, fine grit and then paint it. When your done, apply a thin coat of clear. Let that dry, and start putting on the clear thick and wet. When it all dries, it will look new and will last for sure...
I recommend the Import Colors from Nascar in a can, you can get it at Pep Boys. IMO the DuPont doesn't work as well on the trim and such, but that's my opinion. Good luck, I hope that helps!!
