Help: German Maxima is known as what?

I have a friend that got in touch with me and has some questions about his German Maxima. He wrote:

I drive a 1989 Maxima J30, 3L, V6, 24V with 170 hors power.

Is this the same as our Maxima or would this be one of those 2.5L Maxima's that I have heard about? I am trying to help him find parts and accessories, but I don't want to steer him wrong. Anyone have any clue if these are identical to our 3rd Gen Maxima's?

no, our 89's are all VG30E engines, 3L, v6, 12v, 160hp. i've never heard of what you're talking about, but it's not that same as here in the states. and no, it's not a 2.5L, you said it's a 3L yourself...

Just thought that maybe it is just a badging/naming difference kind of like b/t the Japan Ceferio and the U.S. Maxima.

I don't see why it would be putting out 170hp instead of 160hp or 190 like we are used to. Why middle of the ground performance rating we may never know.

It would be the same 12v VG running leaded fuel and no factory cat.

J30

The J30 Maximas were pretty much the same around the world. The JDM J30 Maximas all went to VE in 1991.

Just for FYI. There are some VGs that were never exported to the US. These include the VG20E (115-125 HP), VG20ET (170 HP) and the VG20DET (185 - 205HP). The 210 HP VG20DET is a rare motor. It was used on the JDM version of the Infiniti M30.

The reason why the VG20-series were made was because of the car tax in Japan. If it's over 2.0L, then it's taxed as a large car, so the small VGs were produced for cars like the 2nd gen JDM Maxima (VG20ET), Nissan Cedric and Gloria, and the Nissan Leopard (Infiniti M30) as well as the Nissan Laurel
.

Thanks

Where are you getting all your info from Tom? Pretty insightful. So I can tell him that parts from the 3rd Gen U.S. Maxima will fit his car with no problems?

I have a feeling this guy is going to go nuts. Only kids driving VW, BMW, Opel, and MB's over there. Wants to have a tricked out 3rd Gen to be a little different.

Info

I read Japanese and kept all my Japanese car magazines from the 80's. It does come in handy at times like this....

Parts from US Maximas should fit fine for the most part. Note: Only thing I may question is a Y-pipe. On the US model, the rear end bolts up to the catalytic convertor. I have no idea if non-catalyst-equipped cars are the same.
